My cars just given in. I reckon cars aren't just a luxury they are a necessary part of a better quality of life. Without one everything is so much harder. All should have access to owning their own vehicle and for that matter own home. Surely car yards can make these affordable for ALL people.

".... a necessary part of a better quality life..."? I wonder. Recent research indicates major health issues for people who live with 150m of a main road or highway. It was worse, of course, before lead-free petrol became mandatory. But fossil-fuel vehicles do _not_ mean quality heath outcomes for millions of citizens who reside close to major roads.

Are cars really necessary? It depends. Our sons, 37 (Seattle) and 35 (Montreal) don't own cars. In recent years, we have given away three cars... and deregistered two more. Most of the travel we do is on eBikes. We've covered enough kilometres on these to cross Australia... and recharging them costs around 13c for over 100 kms. We've saved _thousands_ of dollars (in fuel, oil, car service, repairs and parts, registration, insurance, etc.,) and our fitness, weight and general health have really improved.

Nevertheless, we are going to buy a new car next year. It will be an EV, capable of (at least) 400 kms each charge. It won't discharge emissions, damaging others' health... and won't cost us a cent to charge.

While your wish that "...car yards can make these affordable for ALL people..." may seem a little idealistic / unrealistic, it's not out of the question for governments to subsidise electric vehicles, as EVs must reduce health risks for drivers and non-drivers alike!~
