Nursing homes are in need of financial support . Not all nursing homes are the same, some better then others . ALL nursing homes should have a high standard hygiene, food and care which is not happening in all homes. Financial support is needed to make this happen.

As far as I know In Low Care the patient pays 85% of the aged pension and there is extra things you have to pay for. You also pay a bond. The have to allow you to keep a certain amount in funds. As far as I know you get a portion of the bond back when you leave.
High Care you pay more than what your pension is + plus of the income calculated charges. There is some things that are free in high care that you pay extra for in low care.
In top of that the Nursing Homes get a Govt. subsidy. Th qualify for that they have to meet minimum standards. I don't know what happens now but the Nursing Homes knew when they are going to be inspected. Regulation is a ratio of one staff member to a set number of patients. However many patients, especially need 2 staff members at the same time to help them. That reduces the number of staff available to treat 2 patients at the same time. On one occasion when I was visiting a patient at a high care facility the person was left sitting on a commode for 30 minutes after I arrived. I checked the time I arrived because I had an appt. to go to.

It seems to me that the quality of care one receives in aged care is very much related to the costs of provision and this has been exacerbated by for profit companies moving into the sector and the government adopting cheap charlie practices in this area. These homes need to be adequately staffed and the employees remunerated properly.

It also brings to mind some advice that was given in jest, but is somewhat meaningful iun this case: "Be nice to your kids, they pick the home you go into".

Yes, we are an ageing population. Not to mention that young sick people are placed with elderly as there are no places for the younger people. I know when my father went into a home, I was frantic looking as there werent many places. Yes spend some on the elderly we will all be there one day.

i understanding what you are saying, my sister-in-law had trouble finding accommodation for her elderly sick mother who needed special care and my brother is in the same situation with his wife.

However, I do remember some advice that was given to me in jest, a few years ago,"be nice to your kids they pick the home you go into" It was said as joke but does contain some good advice.

I would love to see more regulations for nursing homes, and the QNU is making a start with the push for staff ratios.
But as I understand it most nursing homes are funded by our superanuation, and as there seems to be plenty of yemon there, (just look at your fees) as well as gov support, I think the system needs for more regulations.
On a sad side, I always give left over wool and art supplies to my local nursing home. Recently I had 'outgrown' to designer jackets, so I sent them to my Nan with instructions that if they did not fit to pass on to another resident as nice branded clothes (let alone getting to the shops) are way too expensive for the average pensioner. The nursing home would not allow such a practice. How silly, especially as I am still alive so there would be no emotional reasons for not allowing such a thing!

The entire financial support system needs serious reviewing! Honestly the amount of money wasted on things & ppl who don't turkey need it is ridiculous! Anyway regarding aged care, a good thing ppl can do is donate food & gifts at various times of the year, volunteer at your local aged care facility, note not all will let you but most will. It's about giving people your time & respect that they need the most, a fancy room would come second on the list to residence in care

if you want more then we need to count our ages back - if you are disabled or reproduction age you get more than the elderly who have paid money into society so these can have things.

Yes I really think they do, They need more people helping, in a matter of fact I once did work experience at a nursing home and I was allocated to look after a certain group everyday, from 7am-9pm it was long and tiring but I got a good satisfaction out of it. The government just don't quite see how hard it is for them being the age they are or disability they have. It's not fair!

Nursing homes are severely under funded. I think that every Australian citizen who has spent years working and contributing to society should be shown appreciation in the form of care when they need it most. I think that's why we pay tax's. We already contribute to the health car system in the form of medicare i don't see why they cant make a contribution to nursing home.

Yes I really do think they should be getting more funding especially in the area of nutritious meals for the elderly. I'm sure some of the meals served wouldn't be eaten at home. There is also a shortage of staff leaving residents feeling like they are not worthwhile because they cannot get the individual attention they need due to the lack of staff and time.

Majority (not all) of nursing homes are run as a business by a religious group. As a religion, they already get tax breaks we can only dream of. The ones run by non-religious businesses also do quite well. The skimping is usually more to do with the CEO bonus than anything else. In both cases, the residents lose a high % of their pension to be there.

Nursing homes get finicial aid according to the difficulty of the patients. Unfortunally most nursing hhomes skimp on things to save money and sometimes that can include cutting staff. sadly i see this all the time as a nurse and it makes me sick and sad for the residents and their loved ones

Yes i do i think that the government should pay some money for the old peoples home. You pay a lot of money to move into a old person home and i think that this should change.

Hi as you like you i have been working as a nurse for 43 years and spent the last 10 years was in Nursing Homes and i have a Daughter that is a DON at a Nursing Home now and we both both have said that the goverment do not care about the Clients that are have to live in them as when you go in to one you no longer have no dignity of any kind left as you have to have people to do every thing for you and as i finished nursing last year after getting cancer i have told my family i will never live in one and i will end my life before any court tells me i must and that does happen
