Melbourne has better and cheaper public transport and a crazier road system. The GC, is generally just congested around surfers paradise and the public transport system while somewhat effective is hideously expensive.
If I was spending a holiday on the GC for 2 or more weeks I would rent/bring a car (and a street directory) and look at staying somewhere in surfers paradise. That way I could utilize the public transport system near surfers if I wanted to and use the car if I was going to theme parks or the southern beaches or shopping malls (which are more car friendly)
