Hello we are going to new York for a few days in September does anyone have any advice on the best things to see and also if you have a great place to stay that does not cost the earth and is central to the main attractions. This is our first trip over seas ! :)

I went to New York for a 3 day long weekend as part of a longer trip to the US a few years back. It's amazing what you can cram in and just wandering around the streets you can soak up tons of atmosphere and take in famous iconic sites. I think a must do would be to go up the Empire State Building - queues can be long, but it's worth it for the view. Take the Staten Island ferry - it's free and gives you a great view of the Statue of Liberty as you sail past. We got off and got straight back on again, and the view heading back towards lower Manhatten is wonderful. Take a stroll along Fifth Avenue - just to gawk at the designer stores. You will notice the streets are a lot cleaner and tidier around here! Also take a stroll through Central Park - if only a small corner - but not in the nighttime. We felt safe wandering around the streets, even late at night, and so many restaurants are open late you can eat anything at any time. Head over to Times Square and be amazed at the lights and the crowds. We also walked over the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. All doable and most of it free!
