Discussion: Mobile phone cameras - useful or just flashy?

Australian Bureau of Statistics estimates 95% of the adult population have mobile phones while a much smaller percentage (10%) have the more advanced 3G network enabled phones. Nokia especially have been advertising heavily its 'N' series of phones (pictured opposite). These phones come together with some amazing digital picture and video capture capabilities to rival digital cameras. All of which is easily uploaded and shared online (so they say).

After a recent shopping trip for a new mobile I noticed it was hard to even buy a new phone without a camera/email/calender etc. etc.

I am interested in your views on mobile phones. Should they be all things to all men containing cameras, diaries, email, web browsers etc. ? Personally I like to keep my gadgets separate, mobile phone for calls and video/digital cameras for taking photos and video.

Judging by all the new mobile phones on the market companies like Nokia see this as the future but what do you think? Do you have a phone with a camera/email etc.? If not, would this type of capability lure you to get a new phone? Maybe you are happy just making calls and sending SMS messages?

hsvtj says: I recently purchased a new Nokia phone with a 2.0 Megapixel camera, and was a bit sceptical about how good it would really be. but after using it in good situations, like in the day time with the settings all correct i have actually had some very good results. the photos would be of marginally lesser quality than my actual digital camera. i think its great having multiple devices in one, i dont always carry my digi camera everywhere, but now i dont need to.

I own the nokia 9500 and its more like a computer than a phone i have had it for 4 years and it has been the ducks nuts, although 4 years is old for a phone its only now other phones are catching up to it as it was very advances when it was released im egerly awaiting the next upcomming modle the E90 and only then will i upgrade from the trusty 9500 which still works perectly.
point of the story is ive been bitten by the technology bug and its made these high end phones impossible to go past my brother and dad both have Nseries nokias the 70 & 73 and they have outstanding features and applications that can be installed on them, if you know how to utalise them to their full potential then they are well worth the money and much more if not then just go get a non smart phone that will just make calls and text

MellissaD says: I love the camera on my phone. It's excellent for taking snaps of my baby, especially when I'm out and about - you never know when he's going to do something new, and I love to get it all on camera. I'm surprised how clear the pictures are when uploaded to my pc, too.

Apart from the camera, I'm happy enough with being able to take calls, send SMS, play games to pass the time, and use the calculator & alarm functions. I've not yet used the radio or e-mail capabilities.

hoges says: I love my phone, and have one with a web browser and rely heavily on it now (especially for news, weather etc). And because I always have it with me it's really convenient to just use it as a diary. The camera is convenient (again it's always just there, whenever I might need it). With friends and family living long distances away it's a nice way of showing them what's going on. Working in a school is a problem, though, as we have a rule that phones are not to be used during school hours, but the I wonder if that's stopping us from using them as a learning tool.
