Adult Videos or Non Violent Erotica

Do these contribute to a degradation of society? If so, how? In all states of Australia it is legal for any person over the age of 18 to posses and view Adult Videos - NVE. In Canberra and Darwin (both in Australian Federal Territories - i.e. run by the Federal Govt. through a local administration) it is legal to buy them over the counter at Sex Shops and video stores and legal to purchase them from said places by mail order from any state in Australia, yet those same states prohibit the sale of these videos by any means within their state, yet the sale of physical sex - prostitution - is perfectly legal, as are Adult magazines containing nude photos. Isn't that hypocrisy and double standards? What is the difference whether a person seeks out a prostitute, buys and reads an Adult Magazine or buys and views an erotic video for their personal pleasure? These people (men and women) are not harming anyone simply by viewing them though some may argue that some people will commit sex crimes as a result, that's the same as some people who watch violent movies will similarly go and commit violent crimes. Prostitution and PORN have been around for thousands of years - ancient cave paintings have been discovered showing graphic sexual images, so if cave men liked their porn is it any worse today? Consider that the Adult Video Industry (making and distribution of Erotic Videos) contributes billions of $ to the economy, as do all the Adult magazines and sex toys and sex aids which are all perfectly legal to buy if you are over 18. Many couples say that watching Erotic Videos stimulates their love life. Some will say "to each their own - whatever turns you on" while others publicly condemn them and privately support them. Even some married politicians have been seen buying these videos in Canberra Sex Shops. They have done nothing illegal and as adults, do they not have the right to view them if they so desire? One could make comparisons with the Gay Marriage proposals that some have claimed will lead to a total breakdown of society and even people having sex with animals. Is there any evidence that any of these claims about erotic videos or gay marriage will lead to a breakdown of society? As long as it does not harm anyone else, should not all Australian adults be allowed the same rights and access to this material regardless of where they live?
I am not taking into account any religious viewpoint - we all know that all the churches have a public standpoint on anything to do with sex but many "clergy" have been known to frequent adult shops incognito and buy these videos and magazines for personal use. Do as I say not as I do.

Is society as a whole any worse off having these videos and would it be better or worse if they were more freely available. In what way, if at all, do they affect society?

Firstly, you can't call the cave drawings porn unless you can establish that they were used for the purpose of sexual arousal. They could have been drawn for instructional l purposes or simply to record an activity no different to drawings of a hunt...we'll never know.

Is society any worse...? I don't know, I'd have to study a society that's completely free of porn and compare differences between ours and there's on so many levels eg
has porn led to any difference in our respect for the either gender?
has porn led to harm to children between to two societies?
do either societies enjoy a better sex life for presence of porn?
does either society have more sexual based crime as a result of porn? etc etc

'if they were freely available'...you know there's a thing called the internet. It's quite popular and there's a lot of free porn on it...
In what way, if at all do they affect society? Again see above comment, you can't be sure without doing comparative studies. But like most things, there would be both positive and negative outcomes.

I'm really not sure what kind of response you expect to get from this question.
