What do you think of all the different types of milk? Omega added/ fat deleted or reduced only used A2 etc etc. What happened to just milk? When we were kids the milk was delivered by the milkman into the billy hanging on the front fence! Don't ever remember feeling sick because of what was not in the milk. It was pasturised and fresh with cream you could skim off the top. I'm not going to say 'in the good old days' but seriously there was a lot less sickness around. What do others think about the 'messing' with food?

I mainly buy full cream milk, I also remember when you used to leave out your empty milk bottles (for the number of new bottles you wanted) on your front steps in the evening (with the money because it was then safe to do so) and the milkman would come early in the morning. I also loved having the little bottles of milk at school, where you could drink it plain or take your little container of milo or quik to add to make it a bit more special.

I was brought up on cow's milk. I do think there are to many choices to choose from. Milk is Milk and has its own taste. No chemicals can change that taste.

I wish I could drink ordinary milk... I grew up on a dairy and had plenty of treacle bread and cream, and boy Ised to enjoy it... Now they find that I am allergic to dairy foods, so I have to have uht milk... cant say I am impressed with it, but I am not allergic to it...... Yes it was great, the milk was thick and rich, and when seperated the cream was oh so good... nothing like it now around unfortunately.....

Ah! The memories! I also remember the milko delivering straight from his urn to the family billy can, and later milk in glass bottles with the cream on the top!

These days we try to buy local (saving "food miles"), organic (because it should have less impact on the environment, not because it is "better g=for you") and full fat, just because. Although I do find low fat works better in my espresso machine so we do buy that from time to time.

Mind you, we do tend to take the local and organic options whenever we can in all produce.

Only full cream milk for me. Too many milk varieties around. I tried skim - don't like it. I was born in 1968, and I vaguely remember the bottles of milk the milkman delivered. There are too many chemicals and preservatives in food and milk nowadays

it is getting a little confusing to buy milk these days, there are so many choices. I guess it is good for those that have particular health issues. I remember the milk being delivered by the milkman . used to love the sound of the horse's hoof on the street. sounds like the dark ages, but this was around the early 70"s. also we used to get the milk at school at recess, and I remember it was never refrigerated, even in warmer months, can't remember anyone getting sick either.

I only buy UHT milk because I don't drink milk. UHT Milk doesn't have to be refrigerated until it is opened. It has a long "best before" date so there is none wasted. UHT Milk is processed at a much higher temperature. Becuase of a serious medical condition I buy semi-skim Devondale UHT Milk- not as much fat but much better than skim, and tastes a lot better too. Be aware that some of the cheap brands only keep for 5 days when opened (and aren't as good quality) whereas Devondale definitely keeps for 7 days. CAT17,, one problem with billy can milk. When it rained sometimes it ran off the milky's hat into your milk. My Aunty saw that happen on a few occasions.

I like natural milk with no additives. The tastiest milk is full fat Mungali milk from the queensland tablelands. It has a skim of cream on top. I used to love milk in the bottles cold from the fridge. I still drink probably about 6l of milk a week and love it

Milk on the grocery shelves has become a frankenfood, a food that has been so processed that it no longer has much goodness. The more we do to the milk the less healthy it is. Homogenization changes the consistency of the fat so our bodies can not deal with it as they should and pasteurization kills all the good enzymes that are so good for our gut. The best milk is raw milk from grass fed cows who are free from antibiotics and hormones. To get healthy milk, you really need to have your own cow, or know someone who does!

I think we have gone mad, in every food area not just milk. I was bought up on a hobby farm, drank milk straight from the cow, made butter, cream and yogurt which we ate daily, and none of our friends and families who lived the same were ever sick, never needed to see a specialist, cancer wasnt around, nor were supermarkets, Everything we needed we either grew or produced and only bought the odd thing at the local store.

Still basically live the same way, get my milk from a farmer friend, same with meat, grow my own vegetable, chooks etc.

As one smart person once said, If you cant understand whats on the label dont buy it...... so my visit to the supermarket takes about 30 mins a week, and it doesnt include buying plastic, overprocessed junk called milk, butter etc.

So really cant say much about supermarket sold milk, too much rubbish in it, will stick to my old fashioned way of consuming dairy and stay healthy and wont waste time in supermarkets that are so overstocked with products we dont need, have no ideas what in them, and no idea what harm they do to us and our children...... long live simplicity

I feel the same way as you, that the tampering of food is contributing to sickness and other ailments. I also think that food is messed with in order to try to confuse people while they rip us of with much less of a product at much more of a price.

I grew up on a farm where I was the cow milker and we had fresh, creamy milk whenever we wanted it. Unfortunately, our children and grandchildren can't enjoy the same benefits. I put it down to all the nutriants that cows eat have been leached out of the soil. I agree that there was a lot less sickness around and I also agree there are too many additives to our food in general. I think it really is a 'Sign of the times" however bad that may be.

Yes, I also clearly remember those "good old days" where the milkman delivered our milk in those little bottles with the gold tops. Mum used to scoop out the cream on the top and always let me have it before anyone else got to it. I reckon there are way too many choices these days and do they really live up to what they say. I just buy the homebrand from Woolworths because its cheap. Occasionally I'll splash out and buy Pauls. I did try the A2 milk when it first hit the shelves and I couldn't taste the difference. I like a good glass of milk and have no problems with the homebrand milk.

What happened to just milk? When we were kids the milk was delivered by the milkman into the billy hanging on the front fence!
Well we move with the times,Life was Different then any way,Some things were cheaper,You could afford to buy cheaper Housing ,If you were a Married couple,I have spoken to most people than,And they Could!,Because I was only a Kid than!,But it was fun ,I did love the milk coming in thous Glass Bottles with the silver Cap.,I don"t know of any one getting sick from Todays Milk,Maybe its the Brand they Buy!

I do not drink Milk anymore, apart from the way they mess around with the natural product, it is also the way cows are treated in this mass production world, they are impregnated over and over again, so they give birth and the milk is not for the babies they give birth too, it is so we get to drink the milk. the babies are taken away and are not given a chance to bond with their mothers, if female they are raised and then they go into the production line, if males they are either killed straight away or they are loaded onto trucks to be auctioned either to be killed or treated inhumanly for veal. their young bodies mean nothing, it is a cruel and horrible world we live in.

There are too many companies trying to continually outdo each other but they only care about sales and not the consumer. We still get sprays and additives and BPA that have been banned all over the world, one I saw a few months ago was lead in vitamin tonic but the TGA was happy about that, that is the problem even the people that supposed to protect us do not. REAL foods are all we need and a sensible varied diet and exercise.

I like full cream milk where you can boil the milk in nonstick pan, when it comes to boil then add 1/2 fresh lemon, stir it once on low flame. then it it comes to boil again. u will see feta cheese. how easy it is. and much less exensive then the market cheese. after that u can cook it with peas or its alone. taste so good try it once thats what I addicted to.

In olden days ,the milks are delivered through milkman and we were in slow and steady technology. Now we want everything are faster and faster, we need different thing in everything. so, we want different in milk also. so there is no wrong in the milk providers. They fulfil the needs of customers.

amazing how easy it is to con those with not much knowledge of a product. most of the "different" types of milk today are only "different" because they carry labels stating a different constituent of milk on different labels. true milk already contains the ingredients that are said to be added. what is not told is what is really added to make extra volume.

As others have said milk used to be in glass bottles, cream on top and we drank it without all the hoopla. Today milk is bad for you or good for you but only this type of milk with this type of additive. I drink soy milk but also good old fashioned pasteurised milk but not homogenised as it does not create the bloating and other problems which 'normal' supermarket milk creates.

a lot of bull and sales hype; full cream only contains 4% fat - you do need some fats and how much would go into a coffee or tea? Say 20mL or 20grams. 4% is only0.8 grams. The different types are only to get you to pay more.

The milk we get now has no taste to real milk. The younger population probably wouldnt even know theyummy, creamy taste of real milk if it hit them in the face.Todays milk no matter the type tastes like a very watered down version of milk. The only thing, if it is kept in the fridge, it tastes nice and cold. They mainly use it to carry all the additives into our bodieS,' not the real ones that we used to get, synthetic ones.If you were to milk a cow and drink that cup of creamy , frothy, goodness you would know what i mean ,So drink up and remember the milk like it used to be

Wonder what started the fad anyways? Milk does need to be pasteurized, but all the other treatments are probably not necessary at all. Like decaffeinated anything - the process and chemicals used to remove the caffeine is more unhealthy that the product itself. So what goes into the milk to change its state?

I am dairy intolerant, so I drink some lactose free milk, but mostly soy based drinks. Not a clue what I am ingesting there, but it does not cause the problems that animal milk does.

I totally agree on the milk issue. I used to drink that awful Skim Milk/ lite Milk etc thinking all was right with the world by doing this. But alas I was mistaken these highly developed milks are very hard to digest can make you sick and certainly are not a replacement for the "good old days"
As a 7 year old boy it was my joy to "separate the milk from the cream" after my older brother had milked the cow every morning. Ahh the milk full of cream (even after the separation process ) and not even pasteurized at this point was unbelievably wonderful.
I only now drink "Full cream" milk and love it and can digest it with no issues what so ever…..

Milk was plain, good, old fashioned milk which came in a glass bottle. The cream was on top and I have always loved milk, there was hardly any sickness around, we did not hear of many. I never had the flu or a cold maybe because I used to eat grass and coal Mum said as a kid, we came from Europe and ate everything that was put in front of us. Even 50 years ago hubby and I milked for a friend of ours 150 odd cows in a herringbone shed, I was pregnant 50 years ago when we milked and we loved the warm milk from the vat and I am 73 now, it did us no harm at all. All the milk nowadays with and without this and that is a lot of rubbish we think.

I am 60 and like you born on or near a dairy farm. We also drank milk straight from the vat. I now live in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and buy my milk from the Maleny Dairy, full cream, pasteurised only for marketing purposes, meaning close to real milk still exists, cost a bit more but you still get that rich cream taste. All my dairy purchases come from Maleny Dairy.

I liked the add whereby a customer asked the lady behind the counter for a bottle of milk and she started to rattle off all these types of milk. The customer replies he only wants real milk. I always felt like jumping in and telling him it doesn't exist anymore.

Also interesting that you say we ate everything put in front of us, we had too, or go hungry. As a toddler I even ate a red back spider, guess I thought I would get the first bite in before the spider did, so I agree with your sentiments on healthy immune systems. These days a child plays in the dirt, gets a runny nose and the mother immediately starts to load them up with antibiotics.

Hi Ingi

Thank you for posting this question.
For the past 10-15 years, I have been a skinny milk drinker. In recent times, after reading a book on ancient wisdom for modern health, it has highlighted to me that the milk we drink has been treated so much, that the goodness has almost gone. To that point, I have now reverted back to drinking full cream milk as it higher in nutrients. Many people drink milk for the calcium. However, by drinking processed varieties where the natural milk fats are damaged or missing, for example in homogenised or skim milks, we actually compromise our ability to absorb nutrients such as calcium.
