New research has recently revealed that 1 in 5 women in Seoul have had plastic surgery. Would you or have you been under the knife in the name of beauty?

It depends if it will help my overall health at the same time.

I would not go under the knife. I would spend the money on a good psychologist to help me accept the things that I don't like myself. Self improvement comes from deep within, not from a knife.

Yes, had a face lift and a (not large) breast reduction just before the cosmetic surgery "surge" started in Australia. It was helpful at the time as I had self-worth issues that really caused me to suffer and I do think it helped to 'give me a few more years' that I felt deprived of after ending a long-term relationship. The only thing I wasn't happy about was the scarring on my breasts and the fact that one ear lobe is now slightly longer than the other! However, overall I don't regret having it done, but do regret having to pay so much for it! I would advise however consulting only a trusted surgeon who provides full information on all that can be expected/not expected from the surgery, and who is known for careful and safe work.

Never! Why subject your body to the extra trauma and stress associated with surgery?? Also, it is easy to tell when someone has had cosmetic surgery - the eyes appear catlike, the face is stretched etc I love when you see a perfect face atop a wrinkly neck!

I personally would not undergo plastic surgery. While I do have some features about myself I am not satisfied with, they are what makes me a unique person.

However, I am understanding of people who might have plastic surgery. If you have the money and are extremely driven to change something about yourself, then the decision is up to you.

I would not go under the knife simply in the name of beauty. Having said that though I realise that imperfections in our looks can cause severe emotional distress in some people especially when they compare themselves to what is considered the norm. Aside from that there is also the factor that people who have had an accident and been injured as a result might need to do this. But those things aside I would never consider it even if I had the money for such a process.

  • 16th Dec 2019 06:39pm

For vanity? No. To remove the rolls of loose skin left over from my 60kg weight loss? In a heartbeat if I had the money. Not afraid of surgery (I've had dozens of surgeries and have over 1.5m of scars as a result), but the cost is just totally prohibitive. As for things like botox for wrinkles or fillers or plumpers? Forget it. I am not that vain whatsoever. I'd just like to be able to wear a normal pair of underwear without having to tuck copious amounts of skin into them first...

yes I would - I already dye my hair cause I'm not ready to go grey - it would be a tune up rather than the full monty for me at the moment i'm early 50's alike the way I look and feel - but if that changes and it helps with self esteem and confidence why not - people spend a lot of money on clothing to look good and fit in as well as time on their hair and skin care what's the difference really. I personally prefer to look after myself with good eating habits and exercise BUT I have at least 10 people in my circle that have had permanent stomach banding to lose weight (with varying results) - I was appalled at first BUT then I realised that if it meant they felt better and were healthier, by losing the weight THEN who am I to judge - its up to the individual to decide what is right for them

I can't believe there is really so many Korean women that need it. Most of the ones I've met over the years have been fine.
But then, Korea is very misogynistic.

If accurate surveys were done of each country, they are probably all within a reasonable % of each other. The hype about how everyone should look does not help.

Some years it's a Barbie Doll / hourglass figure, others it's having a rump the size of a small planet (Kardshian style - I guess some find it attractive, but I'm not sure why).

Be yourself & be happy with what you have.

If I could afford to do it, i would in a heartbeat. I have looked into the procedure I dream of doing and while it is advertised for around $6000 when I actually paid the $200 consultation fee i was told it will be $17800. Big difference and something I can never afford to do.

Yes, I did go 'under the knife' in Thailand at a large hospital.
I had surgery on my upper eyelids.....they were so tired and droopy, and bingo, I love the outcome.
This procedure took place in 2010, and I have never been happier. The staff and medicos were absolutely fantastic, could not speak more highly of them.

True beauty comes from within, As humans we place to much pressure on outer appearances rather than looking at the inner beauty of the person.

  • 4th Dec 2016 12:28am

No I wouldn't go under the knife. The only time I might have plastic surgery is if I was in a bad accident and I was badly disfigured or burnt and I needed some kind of repair to normalise my appearance. I know some people have face lifts because they want to look younger for their work or career but I think it would then become addictive to have more and more.

I personally wouldn't go under the knife for an aesthetic purpose but I can understand why people would. If a person has a feature on their face that saps their confidence and they have the money and capacity to 'fix' it, why not? I do think there needs to be more emphasis on personal acceptance rather than the constant bombardment of 'perfection' in our society though.

Too often they are 'fixing' things that are not really a problem. When I worked in theatre (surgical), the number of young women (18-25) that came though for boob jobs was ridiculous. In a lot of cases they hadn't finished growing naturally.

For the treatment of a large birthmark in an awkward place, I can understand the need to have it bleached out, but really, not having a Kardashian bum is a blessing.

No, not to be more "beautiful". I think I look just fine, never wanted to look "perfect". It is a shame people are so insecure. • 9th Dec 2015 06:25pm

I think this is a very personal decision. I had surgery fairly early in my late teens to improve my ears (pinning them back) and nose (removing a slight ridge), and it dramatically increased my confidence and appearance. Visually these were pretty subtle changes and improved rather than changed my appearance, and I think this is pretty key.

Cosmetic surgery and procedures are much more affordable and accessible than they were 20 years ago, today you can go to your local saloon and get fillers and Botox done at the same time you get your hair cut. But the question that arises, is this a bad thing? Ultimately I think people have the right to choose what they do and like anything use some common sense.

Popular procedures in Korea include double eyelid surgery (which involves the removal or reposition of tissue around the eyelid to open up the eye), V-line jaw reduction (which involves making a small incision and shaving the mandible to give the jawline a slimmer more angular appearance) and rhinoplasty.

This is just a sample of some of the procedures gaining popularity and while some of these procedures seem quiet extreme, you also need to take in some cultural context. Korea is a highly advanced, competitive, image conscious and progressive market, adopting new social and market trends and well before other markets are even in the planning stage. The Australia market by comparison in terms of trend adoption and general consumer market maturity is well behind. So social, cultural or product trends you might see in Korea or more progressive Asian economies don't really find their way into our market for several years if at all.

But even keeping that in mind, you just have to look at the increased number of Australians heading to Asia for cosmetic surgery to see that there is a demand. While more straight forward cosmetic procedures such as Botox and fillers are relatively commonplace. Had you said to someone you were going to a doctor to get botulism toxin injected into your face 20 years ago people would have called you insane, but today these procedures are fairly commonplace.

Ultimately the decision to undergo cosmetic surgery is a very personal choice and really needs to be left up to the individual, if it improves their appearance and self-confidence I really don't see that as a bad thing.

My friend had rhinoplasty because the tip of her nose could be touched with the tip of her tongue, so fair enough - her confidence has been restored despite the post op agony. Personally though, I am so fed up with being bombarded about people's looks ... everyone of us is going to age and I reckon it looks ridiculous when cosmetic surgery is really obvious on an older person. Young people are under so much pressure just having to grow up without vanity being shoved infront of them at every turn.

People say being 'natural' is best but I think it's because they don't have the spare cash to do it.
If they or me had the cash, we'd do it.
I certainly would have a few procedures and ongoing treatments.
Who wouldn't it?

I am not keen on plastic surgery for purely cosmetic reasons. however, where some one has been injured and has suffered horrific scarring I think that it is a good idea. YES! i have had my boobs done and loving it.
After pregnancy they looked like 2 long wet footy socks.
i was over it.
I am not insane or insecure, infact very confident and outgoing.
i wanted to bring back the volume and that's it.
Putting foreign objects into your body is an old one, so is what we eat 90% of every day.
Risks are part of any surgery and if you are also strapped for cash and needing to finance the op then you shouldn't be doing it.
It is really unfortunate that some women have had complications yet about 95% of these cases are not done with a credited and member of the board of the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons
Sadly enough many doctors claim themselves to be "cosmetic surgeons" whom are just your local GP as there is NO such thing as a "cosmetic surgeon" will prey on the desperate and gullible which is deplorable.
Certainly there are women who might think that if they have a certain procedure done that it will be life changing for their boyfriends not for themselves.
Any Accredited Plastic Surgeon will not tolerate this attitude and will give the client a psychological assessment on the spot as they are qualified to pick up the signs and know how to deal with this type of behavior.
My girlfriend who has also had her breasts done was told by her doctor who was not for the original procedure that she has breast cancer after a routine mammogram and NOT due to the implants .
The good news was that the implants that were placed on top of the muscle where the tumor was growing had stopped and latched onto the implant because there was no where else to grow.
They saved her life you could say.
Women who scoff at others instead of giving support to their sisters should not be so critical of others , generally the claws come out whenever they see someone attractive, it is a shame that they can't have plastic surgery on their personalities instead.

I wouldn't go under the knife. I have always told myself that I will age gracefully. At the end of the day, your skin can only stretch so much and you will eventually have old saggy skin. I know this is a little cliche but for me "beauty starts from within". If it was for a disfigurement of some sort then I completely understand but if they were to go under the knife because they thought they were ugly, then maybe they need to do a little soul searching. I don't know, that's just my opinion.

Yes and i have .
And so happy i did.
I was tired of looking tired and have always liked to look and feel my best and after trying other non invasive treatments that didn't deliver i wanted to something about it for me and no one else and certainly not for the likes of society .
i had my eyelids lifted and the results are awesome.
I can see eyeshadow again along with m eyelashes as i love to wear mascara.
For the small percentage of women who "can't stop", then it is the plastic surgeon's responsibility to asses the patient as there are often more deeper underlying issues going on.
I really think it would be nicer if women who condemn this sort of thing should show a bit more sisterhood towards each other and offer a little support.
Men on the other hand do not need to bother in keeping up appearances because they see each other as equal and i never hear them squawk about the way someone else looks behind their back.
Instead they often are overheard how great they look.
Men don't compare themselves like women do.
As long as media will be around and as long as we keep buying their magazines plastic surgery will thrive for good and bad reasons.

If you're that way inclined I guess you should go for it. Personally I would never do such a thing, I'm a firm believer in being all natural. I mean it doesn't matter how much money you have, how pretty you are etc. Because at the end of the day, the casket will still be the same size.

I would not go under the knife in the name of beauty. Why? Because we are created as God image and by going under the knife, we basically disagrees with our image and what God has created. Going under the knife to look pretty is not the best idea, there are many questions to be asked before doing so, such as What happen when you get old? or What is the after effects?. If someone wants to look pretty, I think it is better to go to a dermatologists or use a skincare product that are world-know or world's number 1 or go to a beauty salon and ask for make-up tutorial. There are many things you should consider before going under the knife in the name of beauty.

Definitely not!! I am really uneasy with the whole being cut up process! I have watched family and friends all choose the path of the knife, and it really didn't seem to make them any happier or nicer people. The complete opposite sometimes, they became a little conceated. I will just keep sucking it up, and work on being healthy, There are always exceptions, and my 25 year old daughter is just that, having her body in proportion has helped her to become a healthy and delightful person. But for me, no knife! No way!

It depends on what the problem is. If I had ears that stuck straight out or had a very large nose, I would definitely consider surgery.

I have never had surgery for beauty reasons and I don't think I would. I think you should just be happy with the body you have or work out to get a body your happy with. Although I do understand that some people do have trouble to loose weight etc. I have had friends that had really big boobs and they had to get them reduced as they were so big they had back, neck and shoulder problems. It really depends the person.

I would never go under the knife to change my appearance for any one, I believe that the image media is trying to get across to everyone if far from 'prefect' for people to believe that they must look a certain way to be consider "attractive" is outrages! all those so call "beautiful people" that go under the knife for what ever reason just because "their image" may look what they think is beautiful doesn't make them a good person. To me it shouldn't matter how you look, if you are a kind, thoughtful, honest, open minded and caring person then you are beautiful. people really need to stop thinking that everything is about appearance!

Yes, totally! If your unhappy about something about yourself and there's a way to change that and be happy why not, it's not for anyone to judge but yourself, you only live once and if fixing something about yourself or improving yourself is going to make you happier in life then seriously why not!

I love watching beautiful men and woman of the world. I have just seen about 50 photos being taken of people around the world. The camera was so good, every wrinkle was shown, there was no detail missed. And it gave so much character to the face, told of hard times, struggles, wonderful smiles where the lines along the forehead are emphasised. And then I see this question.

I often wondered do I think so poorly of going under the knife because I don't have the cash to do it, or am I scared of the wrong outcome, but after seeing these photos - I just don't want to be afraid of growing up. I don't want my physical beauty to be compromised. I want my wrinkles, sunspots and all the nooks and crannies to go with it. I am a proud woman but I simply don't want to be taken in my this need to see physical beauty going under the knife.

And then I wonder as my years go on, and I turn 60, will I be one of the few that looks 60 when all my 60 year old friends look 30, 40 or even 50 and so be it. I love physical beauty but I also love that I am cool with what age is - a progression in life and I don't want that cut off.

I personally wouldn't. There are other ways to change your appearance without going to these lengths such as exercise, diet, makeup etc. I think it shouldn't matter what you look like and it's not about changing the thing you don't like but becoming comfortable with it and excepting it. • 4th Feb 2015 07:55pm

I would love to have a bust reduction, being a DDD cup it is a lot of extra weight on your shoulders & once you develop arthritis in the shoulders & neck is becomes painful. Would be nice to have a smaller bust where I can get normal bras & not have to shop around to find my size, would also be nice to be able run around with the kids without such a bouncy set of boobs. I have had to wear bras all my life & when I was pregnant sizing was almost at the stage of having to get them made.
I had what they call plastic surgery many years ago to have a large plate inserted into my forehead where they had to remove the bone for brain surgery after an accident but it still is not the same as it was before the op & it was an absolute necessity. Fortunately they used a new technique & the only scar I have is hidden in my hair so only the hair dresser has to see it.
So yeah I would undergo cosmetic surgery for that purpose or to remove excess skin for those who lose a huge amount of weight & are left with unsightly loose skin which will never shrink naturally. I would never consider having cosmetic work done on my face just out of vanity, wrinkles add character to yr face & tell a story all of their own. Take care of your skin while you are young & you reap the benefits when you get to my age, I rarely wore makeup when I was younger & always made sure it came off at the end of the day if I had to use it. A good moisturiser with SPF & a good routine as well as diet will help your skin age better.

for certain i would not go through the knife in the name of beauty. there are other methods and alternatives to look beautiful. the most effective would be applying makeup for an illusion for a bigger eyes, slimmer face, high toned cheekbones and full lips. daily personal grooming is essential to get into the habit of looking good every day. hope this helps!

Oh how have we grown in technology and lowered our confidence levels to looking like plastic. I don't know whether to shout for joy or shout what the hell, wake up.

You were born one way. Deal with. Use the AA statement. Lord grant me the wisdom to change what can be changed and not fight what cannot be changed and to know the difference between the two. Okay so I am not from AA but it does go something like that.

If you cannot change it, then don't pay someone thousands to do so. If boob job gives you confidence, what does that say about you? A nose job changed everything, what does that say about you? All I am saying is people who love you, don't see you for your boobs, your nose or a wrinkle or two.

We know who we can rely on, who lies, who we can party with, who keeps our secrets, who is on our side. We know who the bitch is, who is the expert with guys or girls and who are the toughies, the nerds or the geeks. We do use she is pretty, he is handsome but these are not the traits we rely on.

I feel so sad that young girls and now men are getting gift cards or graduation presents at the plastic surgeons. All I am saying is resist. You don't have to because others are. This is one of our dilemmas. And because we never see wrinkles anymore, I love mine and those on others. But wrinkless or not that is not what I would rely on you for.

  • 4th Nov 2014 01:33pm

No, never. We are born who we are, even if we have imperfections. The old adage "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" allows everyone to be seen as beautiful. Besides looks will disappear in time.....whereas inner 'beauty' is lasting. It's better to be a beautiful person inside and through your actions.

GOOD TOPIC TO DISCUSS :)

Not in the name of beauty, definitely not! People forget about a little thing called "ageing gracefully" and we don't have to look far to see this. Julia Roberts, Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz...These are examples of those who refuse to be defined by what our society tells us to be and do, and just 'be'. It's an insult to our creator to change the way we look, anyway. We aren't meant to be young forever.

This is a very personal issue for anyone. However, I believe any surgery should be very carefully researched, including the doctors and hospital to be certain it is absolutely what is needed.
I went under the knife, but not for beauty! To save my life.....!
Depending on how you view it, I did have a major breast reduction, by 6 sizes. It was essential after my huge (160kg ) weight loss and what a relief! No more aching back.
I have numerous scars on my body and had considered plastic surgery as they did bother me a lot, and my partner was not happy with them, insisting they be covered.
Once I found out the cost here to have them removed/changed, I changed my mind. Partner left!
To go overseas -anywhere- is not an option as I have seen a few people who went to Asia for theirs and the results were not pretty, cost more to have them fixed once the problems were seen, and one could not be fixed the damage was so bad.

I think this demonstrates the pressures women face in today's self-conscious society. Everywhere, we can see models of perfection in the latest fashions and sporting the new trends, and only the beautiful people stroll the red carpets in size 0 outfits. I think the question is not 'Would you or have you been under the knife in the name of beauty?', but would you or have you been under the knife in the name of conformity to social pressures and expectations?

I had the opportunity to have facial dermabrasion several years back to fix acne scars, but the cost and the discomfort factors put me off. I have considered it. I am 52 and looking a little worse for wear. However when push comes to shove, I don't think I will. It's very expensive and no matter how much I spend, I can't look 25 again. Also, I a bit frightened about the health risks, so on balance I'd say it's not worth it.

I definitely wouldn't make any major changes, especially to my face, I think its really important to embrace who we are. However, I have naturally larger breasts and I expect them to head south in a major way as I age or have children, I'm not opposed to the idea of a little lift. I think that if that is what is going to make you feel sexy and confident, then go for it, these days we have so many means of fulfilling our desires and how we want to look, I don't think anyone should be judged for pursuing that self confidence.

As a young woman heading into a world where the media is dominating and shaping people's aspects, I often feel pressured to "look" as good as women within magazines. Although it is nice to say that "looks don't matter," in reality, looking ravishing is a big part of our society. Magazines are covered in beauty products, fashion as well as perfect looking women - and with that at bay, I have often questioned myself as to whether I would go under the knife. And the scary fact is, is that I probably would despite the health risks associated.

I agree. I know we are never happy with how we look, but I could never alter my body in that way. Unless of course line you've all said due to disfigurement of some sort I would consider it but not because my lips aren't big enough or my nose 'doesn't look like hers'. Besides, people who've had plastic surgery all tend to start looking the same

Never. Not because I have no problem with my looks- I think most people would have physical attributes that they wish were different. My main issue is that once you change your face or your body, you've lost ownership of yourself. It's no longer YOU, YOUR face, YOUR stomach, YOUR breasts. If you change yourself too much your body becomes meaningless and pointless: an attractive, non-descript entity that pleases the eye but has no owner.

I believe people get plastic surgery because of insecurities and if altering her appearance will help feel more secure, confident and happy as a person then why not? It seems so ridiculous to me that some people are so rude about plastic surgery.
I must say though, at the end of the day it is an expensive, quick solution to something more complicated that it initially appear.

It is a common thing for products to advertise "no artificial colours or flavours" because 1 people find them unhealthy and 2 because the product is so delicious it does not need to be artificially coloured or flavoured. I believe humans are the same. Dress us up, paint our faces but don't artificially mess with our genetics because we were formed exactly how we were meant to be.

I would not go under the knife in the name of beauty. In this day in age there are so many beauty products that can help delay the aging process. For example, I have been using Cindy Crawfords " Meaningful Beauty" products for two and a half years now and I have noticed an improvement in my skin and I look younger today than I did 6 years ago.

I wouldnt go under the knife, unless in case of severe disfigurement from an injury or accident.
I see a woman on the train each morning, and she is done up perfectly, and would look pretty except for the obvious facial plastic surgery - no-one past their 30's has NO lines on their face!

If you do have facial surgery for example, you loose the lines etc gained through living.

If you feel that it would make a significant difference to your self-esteem then go for it! But be realistic. It won't make the object of your unrequited love any more interested, nor will it solve any other relationship problems. I had a nose job nearly 40 years ago and have never regretted it. My nose is now smaller and straighter which means that I can wear short hair without my nose dominating my face.

Kikkja
  • 11th Jul 2013 04:48pm

I would but not for drastic surgery. I consider having botox to get rid of small lines around my eyes or forehead. I would as a former breast cancer survivor consider having breast augumentation and in the process an increase in breast size; however I would not have silicone implants, I get the fat sucked out of my butt & thighs and replaced into my breasts. It seems safer. Maybe when I am older I'd consider having some fillers. But that is as far as I would go.

coca
  • 11th Jul 2013 03:59pm

no I would not. It does not last long, besides being a worker in the surgical world, I've seen so many things have gone wrong that it is difficult to correct the complications., and the pain associated with it? Only those who suffered can answer that. When it come to beauty it is up to the on- looker and the owner of that body /face can decide if that is beauty or nor. it also needs the brain to see and decide about beaty.

Anonymous
  • 11th Jul 2013 02:07am

I am currently waiting for my nose to be done after having it broken while being attacked by a man and very happy to have it done. There is 2 reasons for this 1 reason is because I can not breath properly the way it is. 2nd reason is because it is very noticeably crooked. Call it vanity if you like but if I don't have to live with a bad nose I'm not going to. My sunglasses do not sit right and causes headaches because of it. So I guess there are many reasons to get this done but even if it was purely for looks I would probably still have it done. So I guess I have to say I am more then willing to go under the knife for so called beauty although I would never be classed as a BEAUTY even with plastic surgery. Paying for it though is entirely a different matter. I would not pay those outrageous prices for the sake of looking a little better:)

in this case it is sensible and reasonable to go under the knife as it is for necessary reason not for vanity. I do agree with you, You need good breathing device(airway) to live properly otherwise in the long run u will suffer heath related... and yehhh crook nose is no good.

A lot of Korean women do plastic surgery to make them look less Asian - more European.

The only reason I would go under the knife is for disfigurement, not to look like anyone else or for anti ageing, as there are many other non-surgical procedures to keep you looking good such as lasers, non-surgical facelifts etc.

LSJ

In today's world, there is more pressure to go to newer and more drastic measures in the name of beauty. As a young 20 year old person I feel that I would have to say that I have definitely considered it. The only thing holding me back would be the cost and how long the process would take and the risks involved. There are also certain things I would and wouldn't do and I think that once I got to a certain point in my life, it wouldn't worry me as much any more because we all get older and changes happen because of that. I guess that although it is something I have considered, I probably won't actually do it. Sport and exercise are much better options for me.

If someone would do it complimentary.. yes!
I also believe that some people do benefit from something in looks that has made them uncomfortable all their lives.
I know someone who had a super large nose and could understand their decision. However later in life there has been breathing difficulties from the initial operation.
I do believe some operations are unnecessary and people do become addicted to the knife, how scary.
It really is a very personal choice and up to the individual

I think society puts too much pressure on women especially. It's all about keeping up appearances looking younger than you are . From my view society seems to have forgotten that age in itself is beauty too, but perhaps my perception at current is a bit romantic, and maybe with time it will change but maybe I'm not fit to speak on such a topic just yet being currently still in the very throes of my youth, though currently I myself would not be inclined to surgically enhance my body and would rather lean towards ageing gracefully.

I dont think there is anything wrong with plastic surgery. It can completely change someones life in such positive ways sometimes. I do think counseling and screening should be done beforehand and following to make sure the clients are in full clear state of mind and also to make sure it doesnt become an addiction. Cause it so easily could.

I would love to go under the knife in the name of beauty to raise my self esteem. If only it was not expensive and full of risks. In saying that I would get plastic surgery- I mean little procedures here and there such as lips, cheeks, eyes, brows and botox.

At 22 years of age, I do not see myself getting major surgery such as boobs or tummy tuck, but perhaps in the future, I may.

I would not go under the knife for my face unless I had some disfigurement but although aged 76 I would be first in line for a breast reduction if I was allowed an anaesthetic.
I have suffered with trying to buy bras large enough for my breasts. Even my husband agrees it is an almost impossible job. I am size 22 I / J. Trying to buy a bra that gives really good support, fail to give me a "mono boob" I have to resort to try buying online as no one anywhere near where I live sells bras with large cups unless you are size 10 / 16.
Where do they think women who had large breasts when they were young have put their breasts because they have grown older. They just do not melt unfortunately.
Large breasts run in my family, one of my granddaughters at the age of 16 was only size 12 but after removal of a kilo fro each breast she is still a E/F Cup fitting.
Her mother has just had a breast reduction & had 500 grams removed from each breast. I so envy her, she looks as if she has lost a ton of weight but she is still an "H" Cup
Anyone know of any really good Bra selling place online but not Big Girls Don't Cry Any More. They are struggling to try to help. I will be eternally grateful

I personally wouldn't go through that sort of pain if it was anything minor such as ageing or round rings around my eyes, but if it was something unbareable such as radiation or being in a car accident then perhaps I would consider it. I just don't trust people that are looking after a big part of my body such as my face because it could go wrong and I could look even more horrible than being in the car accident. But if it was something like heat radiation I would probably have no choice.

Yes i would go under the knife in the name of beauty! and I totally agree with those women who feel insecurities about themselves and the need to do so. If it makes you feel more confident about yourself and make you like the way you are as a person better, than go for it. But i disagree when women do it because others don't approve of their insecurities; last time i checked what other people think doesn't matter, so long as you're happy then do you :)

Nope! *pops the p*. I'm happy with the way I look, but even if I wasn't (which everybody should be, because everybody is beautiful and unique), I wouldn't do it. The only reason I would would be if I was in a plane crash or something and desperately needed it for my face to actually look normal. Other than that, I wouldn't. it can do harmful things to you and the only reward you get is a satisfied vanity.

I haven't been "under the knife", as such...but I have been under the syringe! I have had Botox in my forehead and to lift my drooping eyelids. It did make a difference, but I only had it done the once. I felt that it did improve the "tired" appearance in my face but I was unable to maintain it because of the cost involved. Strangely enough, after having it done, my forehead wrinkles don't bother me so much now that they have reappeared...I seem to be a little more accepting of my face's ageing process and maybe a little less self-critical.

Although I am totally in awe of natural beauty, the pressures of modern lifestyle tend to get to the modern generation. If someone opted for surgery, I wouldn't be against it. When one can spend time and money to get 'Harvard' on their resume, what's wrong in altering that slightly out-of-shape nose or enlarging those unnoticeable breasts? To each their own! If you want to please the Investment Banking firms, so be it! In the same way, if you want your husband or the entire male sector of the population to take more notice, so be it love!

Most of them would have been boob jobs or eye opening/widening. A few would have been nose raising/straightening.

It's a shae that western influence has infiltrated to that level. Korean girls are quite pretty as they are.

About a year ago a had a breast enlargement and have never been happier with the results. I was always quite shy and self conscious in tight tops and wearing swimmers. I believe I stunted my own...

I am glad to hear everything went well for you and that the procedure resulted in you being able to be more confident within yourself.

If i was ever to get have the option of this type of surgery, i think i would go ahead with a tummy tuck and slight breast reduction on one of my breasts (they're quite noticeably lop-sided) to make them more even.
I have had 4 c/sections as well as other emergency surgery which has resulted in my belly being something i am ashamed of.
My current body shape/looks is something that resulted in me having an extremely low self esteem. I have tried many things but as yet, am still yet to find something to help me see myself differently. Surgery would not make me pretty or attractive to anyone else. It would be purely for myself to make me feel feel better about myself.

Personally no as I believe beauty is with in... A disfigurement to a certain extent I would handle with out surgery but something major I would consider it

I agree too. I have had minor cosmetic surgery which was to remove a facial growth, and some moles, for both self esteem and health safety.

I also agree with you Coco, today appreciation of one's inner beauty seems to have gone by the wayside for the knife. Let's just appreciate ourselves for what we are.

I couldn't agree with you more! It's saddening to watch young girls and women who are already naturally beautiful in their own individual way doing this to themselves just to "keep up with the Joneses" and to try to conform to an unrealistic expectation from certain groups of people and certain media types such as magazines. I dread to think of the side-effects and long term problems this type of surgery will have on many people in the future - some are like "guinea pigs" for unscrupulous individuals wishing to cash in on other people's insecurities. I personally am against it unless it is for extreme psychological reasons, or as you said earlier, for an illness or after an horrific accident.

I think its important to not blur self confidence with vanity, distinguishing between these two very different things shifts the entire argument. Most women pursue some sort of regime to ensure their skin lasts longer from putting on a hat when they go out in the sun, to a rigorous skin care regime, no body likes to age, and I agree it is so important to embrace ourselves and our flaws. BUT if a man or woman feels the need to alter themselves to have the self confidence to go to the beach or wear a certain outfit I agree that they should go for it.
I think that the bigger question is how far should people go.

its always easy to say when some people dont need to get an adjustment. i dont see anything wrong with getting plastic surgery.....especially if you are not confident within yourself. its just like being overweight is there anything wrong with hiring a personal trainer to lose the weight? or would you say that god made us all beautiful and it doesnt matter how we look! we shouldnt feel pressured to lose weight! no, no one would say that

I agree, no one is perfect we should all be happy with what we look like and focus on the beauty we already have! And be thankful for what we have.

They all didn't particularly like the results because it took away from who they were as individuals. It's the same idea for cosmetic surgery really, when does it stop being you?

About a year ago a had a breast enlargement and have never been happier with the results. I was always quite shy and self conscious in tight tops and wearing swimmers. I believe I stunted my own growth due to my love of running since I was a teenager, but whatever the case, they simply never quite developed and I didn't feel like I had a real woman's body. I am so confident and happy now with my body. I had the procedure done in australia by a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon and the whole experience was faultless. Yes, I can't run as much as I used to now (I just use the cross trainer instead) but I definitely prefer the more womanly me. Sometimes this kind of thing can actually make u a much happier and confident person so it's completely up to the woman if she feels this is what she needs that or not.

Glad to hear it was nothing serious

Thank you. I also make sure that I also wear a wide brimmed hat outdoors in the warm weather. Unfortunately I forgot a few weeks ago when I took the kids to the park. We normally make the kids have hats on too. Last time the elder one forgot too - she sometimes reminds me. Unfortunately the younger one who is a 20 months old and has fair skin and was in his stroller most of the time got his face sunburnt while on the swing for a few minutes. Luckily the stroller has a really large hood on it. He was only on the swing for about 10 minutes. We put Aloe Vera Gel on it for 3 days -twice a day and the redness and soreness completely disappeared. He only complained when we touched it but we noticed the redness within a few hours. It ididn't show for a few hours.

I also would'nt go under the knife just for vanity but I would to make myself feel better about myself. So many want to be something they are not with their looks or body and that is not who they are. I would 'tweak' little things, eg. sagging jowls as I got older but I would not want to look like I was caught a frozen wind tunnel. I would want to grow old gracefully but respectfully.

I agree with you Coco, who is perfect? No-one? and what is perfection in a human being? We are all individuals with individual quirks, manners, looks etc. A healthy body and a healthy mind are more important and a normal lifestyle with basic good manners, compassion for others and willing to help others in need is more important than facelifts, boob lifts etc.

i always wanted a boob job further along the track but due to all the complications involved and the big scandals that the news talks about (how surgeons are using lower quality materials to save costs) i dont think i would now risk it. Especially after seeing first hand what can happen if a reaction occurs.

I totally agree with your views in that if it was an absolute necessity as in the event of a terrible disfigurement, i would most certainly consider a corrective surgery.

I agree. I have a scar on my nose (caused by a fall which resulted in a broken nose and split the skin) which doesn't bother me except I was unlucky enough to get a growth at one end of it. I have just had a biopsy and warned I may now have a bigger scar. I am still awaiting results and to get stitches removed later this week. At the moment I am rather nervous.

I agree with you. Today we are under pressure as to what is perfect. I think that natural beauty is the best even with your imperfections. Just appreciate being alive and well.
