while I totally agree it is very good thing that we all help out the flood devestated communities, and I am totally proud of the way us, as Australians pitch in and help our friends in crisis, why is not the Government helping more? Why can the Australian Government give $5oo million to Indonesia, and not to our own country men and woman and famlies at crisis point, who have LOST EVERYTHING ?????

Perhaps it all comes down to how much money there is in the government coffers.I realise that there are many calls on the government's purse - and that purse is not bottomless. If we really want the government to hand out money to every good cause, then perhaps we should be prepared to pay more in tax !!
Unfortunately we all want the government to keep on handing out money all over the place, but no-one wants to pay more yax - similar to the global warming question. Do we want the government to take steps to cut Australia's carbon emissions? Yes.Are we prepared to pay for it in the form of higher taxes or prices? No

i think that the government should stop handing out money to other countries and first look after our own country. look in your own backyard before you hand out! i mean we are constantly giving to...

Other countires never hand out to us, so we should not hand out to them. It would make for a horrible world if we lead by such an example.

all i can say is that six years ago we were broadcasting long term impact for australia and man it did not look good for us at all
stay away from the coast if the flood warnings go of aspecially around coffs harbour as it could still be a death trap upon trying to flee for your life
the government that gave the 500million is from this country
did you not remember the factorys that were closed down in australia and set up in indinesia around the 1999s aproxametely long term impact studies showed the government was familied from there not australia

There should be money in the kitty for our own people, after all charity begins at home. Unhelpful remarks by Tony Abbott do not help either...

I agree with this. There needs to also be money in the kitty for our own country in times of devastations.
Volunteers are amazing....politicians should be rolemodels.
