hi lata, it is doubly hard to get and keep fit if you have a disability. a friend has motor neurone disease and type 1 diabetes. water exercises are about all that has been tried, the pool is over an hours drive, and as he is wheelchair bound, quite a job getting him there, taking a lot of $s too. has anyone out there tried things like vibrating cushions, muscle stimulators/contractirs? massage is good of course, but out of the range of the budget for most on welfare.

I used to play an amount of 5 sports and balance it out with my other hobbies n study weekly. nowadays I practice tennis here and then, do general exercise, dancing and singing all at once at course. The sports I used to play was swimming for 6 years, squash and golf for 3 year and tennis which delightfully I can say I still play with passion. I over worked myself back then and exercised more than I was suppose to. I did swimming at least 3 times a week for 4-5 hours, then comes golf and squash which only was once a week for 2-3 hours. Last but nt least is tennis which I use to play 3 times a week and from 3 to 8 hours.

It's just matter of life style. Keep going with active work, no smoking and regular fitness will contribute to your health. Regarding drink, you can do it just socially from time to time. I almost forgot, keep active your relation with partner in and out of the bed.

It is very easy to be healthy and fit. just simple eat wholegrain food, vegetables, fruits and brisk walking for 30 minutes, 5 days a week. limit red meat to once a day and avoid cholestral food and eat plant oils

Yes it is hard to keep healthy and fit,you got to have that go in you to keep you motivated and once you start boy it feels good and it would make you feel alot happier with yourself.I myself like to keep fit by running and at the end of the run i feel really good to have achieve something like a good run.Not only that i do keep a healthy diet aswell mainly of fruits and vegetables with lean meats.Keep this in mind once you start never give up.By eating healthy and doing alot of fitness will not only make you feel good it will make you look good aswell and it will turn you into more positive friendlier person.

I am 60 years young and I love to excercise. Not only does it keep me fit and healthy, it keeps my mind sharp and my weight under control.
I joined my local gym many years ago and soon became adicted to group fitness classes, they cater for many fitness and ability levels and by attending regularly you get to meet lots of people and form many new friendships.
I have back problems and find excercise helps a lot, there are several others who have knee problems, weight problems, arthritis and such and all have found excercise helps and is well worth doing. Give it a go, it is well worth the effort in the long term!

TRY A TRIATHLON! It's waaaaay more fun than it sounds, you get to really vary your workouts and spend some quality time in the pool, which I believe to be good for the soul. And the knees! Plus what could be better than entering a few competitions to make sure you don't fall behind with you training?! It's the best thing I ever started and I love, love love it!

I have a chronic illness which interferes with my ability to walk and move a bit, but I have committed to an exercise program and I try to eat healthy foods, in the right amounts.
Once I got into the habit of my better ways, it began to feel natural to me. I have got to my ideal weight range, just a kilo more to lose and keep off, and I will know I have done the very best I can to help my body!

Keeping fit and healthy is actually fairly simple. Its my escape from thing. Follow a relatively healthy diet as well as regular exercise and you're set to go. It puts you in a great mind set. Im no pro and am not out every day doing fitness work but even a little bit a day helps :).

its about kicking out bad lifestyle habits. usually a habit takes at least 6 weeks to kick out. thats why its hard.

Once i gave up smoking with the help of my doctor, i gained immense confidence to completely change my life around, which included becoming fit and healthy. Remembering the pain i was in, the wasted money on tobacco, the generally unhappines with myself is a good reminder that keeps me wanting to stay fit and healthy. Getting bored with the same routine or eating and doing the same things can be tiring sometimes, but if you make a little effort to keep things fresh , and adust a little to changing situations, then its not that hard at all. Time to enlist a little creativity!

Alot of people find it hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle due to injuries such as back pain or cramps, but if you start off slowly by walking each day and not pushing yourself too much and doing some light weights you'll slowly become stronger.
There are alternatives for people with injuries such as swimming, aqua-robics, yoga and pilates. These are common exercises for elderly, pregnant and injured people.
Don't ever rush yourself to drop the weight by suddenly doing a 5km run because you'll do yourself more harm than good.
When you look in the mirror sadly, take a new look at yourself and set a goal, and take it slowly. Expect changes after at least 6 months of changing your lifestyle and then step it up a notch. Patience and willpower are the two key elements to changing your body and confidence.
Good luck :)

One thing I do is attend the gym on a regular basis. I go to Body Pump and Body Balance several times a week. Was early morning walking before Xmas but it's been hard getting back into that. I also teach Aqua Aerobics and run Aqua Aerobic Instructor training courses. Have been actively involved in the fitness industry for 29 years now. Still fit and healthy!!!

I guess everybody's situation is different. I used to be fit and healthy, but after I got married and gave up smoking I doubled my weight in about 10 years.
My wife recently died after a long battle with cancer, and I looked in the mirror and decided it was time to do something about it. It was hard to exercise at first - couldn't walk far because my back gave me grief after about 10 minutes (consequence of the weight) So I started out just watching what I ate, and how much I ate and the kg started coming off. I got on my exercise bike and started riding about 10 minutes twice a day, and within a month I was able to do 30-40 minutes twice a day. The kg still falling away. After 10 weeks I have lost 21kg - only 55kg to go - should get there by this time next year (if not sooner)

I think my message is ... make the first step, and the rest will follow.

good for you Bren losing weight is hard work and by the sounds of it you've been through far worse. i myself have just started to train and get fit again as i now have 3 kids to run around after. Some days are hard but even a nice family walk with the dog is good exercise. stick at it!

I have returned to the guy after 2 decades away and quite a few kilos heavier. I just wish i was in the right mental spot to have done this years ago. I have PT sessions twice a week and do cardio probably twice more. During my sessions i hate my trainer but as the weeks have gone by man the benefits are worth it. not only do clothes fit better, well some have fallen off. But I feel so much healthier this is the reall advantage of exercise and eating well. They go hand in hand. If you are contemplationg going for it do it now there will be no regrets

To keep fit and keep the weight of, you have to work out at least 3-4 days a week and really push yourself at the gym do cardio and core, eat small healthy meals a day no junk food, if you weaken and you haven't been to the gym for a couple of days, oh boy it is harder, so a wor od advice eat right and work out and you will be fit and healthy.

The easiest thing to do is make gradual changes. I'm very active and healthy but I know I'm lucky in that sense. Goal setting (for example, today I'm going to start taking the stairs to my office instead of the lift) is manageable and even enjoyable.

I agree, I have some conditions which make it very hard to exercise. I have however realised that it is easier to deal with pain and discomfort by exercising, it allows your body to cope better.

IT's not hard at all. Keeping fit and healthy for me is essential to me feeling happy, if I start to make bad choices like drinking too much, eating crap or being physically lazy my energy levels drop and life gets even harder. The choice is simple.

thats all well and fine if you healthy to start wife but me I find it a constant struggle as have back problems which also affects the legs ,I have to balance the amount I exicise with the body...

I used to be into bodybuilding and weighed 135kg and had no fat on me if you are going to the gym and use heavy weights you will put on weight as muscle is heavier, if you want to loose weight you have to use light weights with high repetition recently I've been loosing about 1kg per month and that's with no exercise as I'm now confined to a wheelchair and paralized down my left side plus I'm now a type 1 diabetic so if you are unable to exercise look at going on a type 1 diabetic diet

I don't know why but if I have even a couple of days away from the gym I start to feel fat even if i havn't gained a pound. My friend has a theory that its my muscles relaxing

you feel like that when you suddenly stop going to gym, you should not do like that. if you want to stop gym first slowly you should decrease time limit like first inside of 1 hour in gym decrease to 45 minutes for few days and then for 30 minutes for few days and then 15 minutes like that
