Un-hygenic Pillows

It is 2 weeks since I read an article in my Sunday newspaper about 'old' pillows and the amount of bacteria etc that can be growing in them.
I had for years always blamed my continuous 'hayfever' and stuffy head on climate, pollen ,dust, anything but my pillows.
Mine were so old I couldn't even remember when i bought them!!
I replaced them with new ones immediately - and now - my stuffy head seems to be clearing.
It may be purely psychological but it is working for me.

I found I got a better night's sleep when I changed my pillow last year with a pillow, which was Made In Australia, and purchased from a furniture retailer. I also bought one for my son and he says he is getting a better night's sleep too.

Not really a hygiene comment, but after having a really great night's sleep at a relative's house last year, my fiance took note of the type of pillow (the relative works for Harvey Norman...) and bought one for me for Christmas 2010 as it was just soooo comfortable. The pillow is a Symphony Pillow by Tempur and I am rapt! It's very expensive at over $200 retail, but I look at it from the perspective that we spend 1/3 of our lives in bed and a good night's sleep is vital for health. We think nothing about spending $30 on one meal, or $30000 for a car yet won't spend that sort of money on something that improves your quality of life. It's crazy.

tontine have just brought out ones with a date stamped on it, approximately 2 years in advance, so you know when to change it.

I've been wondering if its really necessary or just a really good marketing ploy

hi minty
its 3 months now since I changed my pillows and it has really helped with my hayfever.
I think 2 years is probably a good idea. (along with airing them in the sun every month or so). I don't think it is necessary to buy expensive pillow though - now that would be a marketing ploy.
Glad to see old posts still get read.
