So what's with the diamond ring?

Other than the beauty of a diamond, what makes the diamond any more special than other gems such as a ruby, emerald, amethyst, topaz, etc?
Perhaps you were to get the partner their birthstone set in a ring. Would that not be more significant as it has more meaning?
As a society, does price say more than they actual symbolism of the token? Culturally no, stereotypically yes?

Were my partner to give me a diamond ring I would be highly insulted. I have made my thoughts on diamonds (and roses) quite clear. Sure, some are nice but to me they are cold and unattractive.
Instead I wear a beautiful saphire ring (also my birthstone) left to me by my mother as a symbol of our commitment to each other. It is regarded as an engagement ring by others even though my partner and I know we are unlikely to marry.
My daughters wear beautiful diamond engagement rings and have in some instances for years. Only 1 is married.
On the other hand I refuse to wear pearls as they are considered unlucky by some.

Personally I have a diamond set in a simple white gold band. Yes, it is really juts a symbol, but if you're unwilling to sacrifice a little money for your woman, what are you willing to sacrifice?

The diamond is so beautiful and shiny. Yes gem stones are lovelu, but a cluster of diamond, kept nice and shiny looks so much better.

The ring has strings attached. Unfortunately a ring at the end of a rope is also known as a noose.

good one PukPuk, I also agree with Dallas, a cluster is lovely, whem my marriage broke up I kept my ring (of course), it is now a 41 year old cluster and looks as lovely as the day I got it, ANGUS AND COOTE ( when you through playing games) he was`nt, but the ring is faitful

Personally I'm not at all a fan of diamonds- to me a top quality one has a beautiful sparkle but is kind of cold looking & I feel doesn't suit my personality at all. My husband knew this and when he proposed presented me with a beautiful engagement ring that the feature stone was a large sapphire instead- it still had diamonds on the shoulders for the symbolism of it, but definitely had a much more personal touch (and when I wore it on my wedding day as well, it was conveniently the "something blue". Yes, sapphires are my birthstone but they are also my favorite out of the gemstones so extra special for me.
The significance of the diamond however is not it's price but a combination of the fact it is the hardest substance on this earth, and also how rare it is to find a perfect one- this is supposed to be a strong statement about true love as true love is just as rare, and as strong as a rock. :) This symbolism has been passed down for centuries.
When it comes to an issue of price- obviously that comes down to fashion, even the unset diamonds you pay for in a jewelry store are certainly much higher than you would pay for wholesale (an average of 250%, often VERY much more). However please bear in mind that diamonds are not always the most expensive choice. Due to the composition of the emerald, which is a very soft and usually very flawed stone, should you find even a small, undamaged and virtually unflawed stone that has not been treated to hold the stone together (which the heavy majority of modern genuine emeralds have), the value would very much surpass that of even a very large high quality diamond.

My sentiments exactly!
So why the need to buy something so expensive when it's just a sign that 'this person's taken'?
