Hi, This is my first post, so I hope its in the correct forum.

I Live in Adelaide, and am looking for a hairdresser, I have fine hair but a lot of it, I also have it streaked. I am looking for somewhere that someone out there has been too. Like most am not flushed with cash, but $50 for a haircut, I'm sorry I just cant afford that.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this, and hope someone has a great hairdresser they can pass on....

Kind Regards,

Lise

I live in Sydney so I cannot help with that but I do agree with you. Prices are too high when it comes to hairdressers. You go in expecting to pay only for the hair cut it self and you end up paying for then to dry your hair after the cut. Do they expect that you walk out of there with your hair all wet.
I have found the way to do my own hair with some tricks I learnt or asking friends for help when trimming, specially at the back.
I know this doesn't help you much but it's always good to vent.

I have short thick hair and I was unhappy with the cut that my hairdresser gave me so my husband recommend that I see his barber. I balked at his suggestion but he told me that he does ladies cuts and so I thought I would give him a try. Well, I was really surprised as he was from the old school and cut the hair the way it grows not against it. In doing this my hair took on a more natural look and fell into place. I was paying $18 at the hairdresser for a cut that I was not happy with and now I am only paying $13 at the barber's and I am happy with the cut. Another good thing too is that I don't have to make an appointment and now my husband and I both go to the same hairdresser..

I used hairdressers for years but was disgruntled with the cut so my husband recommend his barber who does ladies and gents cuts. Well, I decided to give the barber a go and I am very happy that I did as he does a better job than my previous hairdresser. He is from the old school who learnt to cut with the way the hair grows. I don't need to make an appointment which suits me and I only pay $13. Maybe trying a barber who does ladies cuts could be the answer for you, it's worth a try!

Lise someone in my family has the same problem too. She goes to a training school like the univerty in perth but i will find for you but you don't live over here but i think you should them because they are always looking for models so you might pay less than $50.00 so give them a try.

You can try to go to those hair dresser colleague shop, there are students as hairdresser trainee and it only cost u between 10-20 dollars for man and woman.

some of them are quite good as well.

So glad you had a good experience through Tafe, I had been there before I moved to Melbourne and it was always great. Now I am struggling to find anywhere that I can get my hair done under $100. I have only med length hair and never have more than a trim and 1/2 head of foils. I never have it blow dried as that just bumps the price up more and when I can will avoid the wash too. Good luck with your tafe experience in the future.

I feel the same as you, but I live in Perth, and my hair is thick and course, but I yet have been able to find a hairdresser that can cut my hair good.

I sometimes wonder if I were to put an advert in the newspaper for a really good hairdresser to contact me, and perhaps have my hair cut shown on T.V. before & after, .... as my hair is very hard to cut & style.!

Sorry I can't offer you a good hairdresser in Adelaide.!

Julie

Lisa I left Adelaide for Perth in 1990... but even $50 for a haircut here can sometimes be the norm however, there are some great local hairdressers in my area that do it for much less...ie. $30, but you need to find one in your area that does the same but has good cutters. It took me a while. I have the opposite to you. I have thick strong, wavey hair that is very hard to cut and if the hairdressor doesn't know that he/she is doing, it can be disastrous.
Have you thought of looking into a bartering group? Before I left Adelaide I used to barter goods and services with a bartering group called L.E.T.S. LETS is short for Local Exchange Trading Scheme/System. Quite often you will find people on the bartering lists that are qualified hairdressors and may not be working full-time and offer their services. With LETS you don't have to trade with the person that you want the service from. You can use a service and later on do something for someone else. Any skills can be traded...i.e. typing, taking someone shopping who hasn't got a car, sewing, cooking, babysitting/child mindin etc. I found a link that may help. One link on this page didn't work but it may be a start for you if this is something that may help with cost of hairdressing... It may also help with other things like plumbing, handyperson work, car repairs etc.

Hope this helps

I just had my haircut today at Just Cuts. Happy with the haircut, but their price has gone from just under $20 to now $27 (that's without hairwashing or blow dryer). I don't live in Adelaide, but...

Hi Bellxchat,

My mum goes to just cuts and only said the same thing last week, that their prices have gone up, she's happy with her hair cut.
They dotn do colors, which is my main problem, even now it's almost a year since I posted this question! WOW that time went quick.

I would look into your local tafe, as in Adelaide it's $9.00 for a haircut, and I can get a full head of foils for $33.00!! Impressive hey!

So I do hope their is something where you are....Good Luck :)

Thanks for your reply :)

My pleasure Lise, you have made me feel good knowing that I helped. If thats the way that chap does his business he will find he wont have any. Even if you think something when your in business...

Hi Shazza,
Likewise you made me feel good too :)
and I totally agree with you, he wont have a business for much longer, carrying on like he did, and I did feel like crap and I was putting him out!
As they say, he did me a favour as I am very happy with the service I received at the TAFE, and also the comments I have received on here has helped me personally as well.
Thankyou for all you positive advice,
Cheers

Hiya Shazza,

Firstly, Hope you all have had a good day :)
I am Happy and very grateful to let you know I rang the TAFE and made an appointment, which was today, and I am so so happy...

My pleasure Lise, you have made me feel good knowing that I helped. If thats the way that chap does his business he will find he wont have any. Even if you think something when your in business especially eg hairdressing he doesnt have to verbalise - you go there wanting to feel good not feel crap. You know what they say the pen is mightier than the sword & word of mouth advertising - negative & positive has impact.
Take care

Hiya Shazza,

Firstly, Hope you all have had a good day :)
I am Happy and very grateful to let you know I rang the TAFE and made an appointment, which was today, and I am so so happy with the haircut I was given, all the people there were so so lovely and I had quite a bit cut off and styled and all for $13.00!!! I was amazed, as I felt at ease, and as I sid all so very friendly.
I went to LOVE HAIR at the northpark shopping centre a couple of times, the manager there Patrick O' Rourke cut my hair which was $32.00. Over Christmas, as we all know things get tight, and when I went there in January for a cut, I made the mistake of telling him that I had just trimmed my fringe, as I have done for years....and he went BONKERS!!!! He actually said and I quote "well if you can cut your fringe, why can't you cut the rest of your hair"
He was also moaning that people in "this area" are feral and want everything done for nothing, yet the come in here with bottles of coke, have mobile phones! I was like in shock, and if he had not started to cut my hair I would have walked out. When I got home, he had not really cut anything off the lenght at all, so I called him and he said to me" you got a perfectly good haircut"
and hung up on me....They say everything happens for a reason, and he did me a favour, at the time, I was very upset..Then happen to come across this forum, which was a blessing, as I am so happy, they told me my hair was uneven, and I told them the same story, and they were speechless!
So I have booked an appointment in a couple of weeks for some foils which will be $17!
So today's experience has been really great for me, as I was anxious going in, but I can't Thank You enough Shazza for your suggestion of the TAFE.

I am also glad to now have contact with other nice people with offers of help and suggestions, it restores my faith in the human race.
Many Thanks Shazza :) You're a star!

Going from working fulltime
to a disability pension all as a result of a workplace bully situation ( yes the bully is still there!)
It's quite an adjustment financially :(
It's just a matter of adjusting...a lot! After buying and having what you want without how much it's going to cost....

So I really do appreciate all your friendly replies....There are still some nice people out there.

Cheers,
Lise

Hey Lise,
Welcome to this place...
I've been informed by my gf that Clip Joint in the city does good work.
They're students learning the trade, but they're supervised by professionals and apparently the quality is above average, and they use quality products.
Also, it's not too expensive as it's people in training

I guess the majority of hairdressers would say it's not too pricey, but I've worked in that industry a few years ago and I totally agree with you on the ridiculous cost of a cut, colour etc.

Hiya Firefly,

I agree with you, and have paid plenty for a cut & colour at well known hairdressers, dont get me wrong, when you work you like your hair to look nice, but price wise it was just getting out of my range, specially now my circumstances have changed, I know of a hairdresser not far from the city, who want $70 for a haircut.....I just think that's daylight robbery, considering the perfect haircut I got today, having short hair...it needs to be cut well....and it was today, I felt it was worthy of more than $13, but I do understand they are learning, but I would not hesitate to Highly Recommend anyone to go there.

I appreciate you're comments....
Many Thanks,
Lisa :)

Hey Lise,
I think the Clip Joint is probably associated with the TAFE... but could be wrong.
Still, check it out :0)

Hey Phoenixflame,

just an update..I did ring the TAFE, and went there today and had a haircut, which I am very very happy with, all the people there were so friendly and lovely and made me feel at ease, It was $13.00 and I had quite a bit cut off, so basically styled, dried, and just a great experience.
So Thankyou very much for your help and idea's as I said to Shazza, I never would have thought of the going to the TAFE, which is just behind Tea Tree Plaza,
I have an appointment in couple of weeks to get some foils, which as the price list says 1/2 head $17... I am just over the moon, and am very grateful for you kind replies and help.....
Thanks Heaps,
Lisa

Oh and I'd totally recommend the Tafe or similar-and quite often you get overall better service than you do at the long running professional hairdressers.
