It depends on what you're looking for.
I've only ever been to Melbourne, but my parents and sister have been to the Cold Coast.
Melbourne, I absolutely love because I love my shopping, food and of course the football.
The Gold Coast from what I've heard is great for relaxing. My parents and sister really enjoyed themselves!

Melbourne has better and cheaper public transport and a crazier road system. The GC, is generally just congested around surfers paradise and the public transport system while somewhat effective is hideously expensive.
If I was spending a holiday on the GC for 2 or more weeks I would rent/bring a car (and a street directory) and look at staying somewhere in surfers paradise. That way I could utilize the public transport system near surfers if I wanted to and use the car if I was going to theme parks or the southern beaches or shopping malls (which are more car friendly)

Gold Coast is good if you want to bask in the sun. and do not mind being surrounded by holidays. You have Dream World and the beaches. If you are interested in art and culture then Melbourne is the place to be.

It is true that it depends on what kind of holiday you want. Melbourne is good for cafes but the Gold Coast although, they have all the theme parks which are good fun, there are other things to do there. You don't have to stay in the Gold Coast....you can drive out to Tropical Fruit World where you can taste completely different fruits. If you love seafood, there are countless fantastic places to have a fantastic feast. Lots of cafes along the shores of the beaches. Definitely a visit to Seaword would be on my agenda........the dolphin show is spectacular.
Also if you love walking, there is a lovely path right around the shoreline of the beaches which also lead up to a fabulous lookout and it is there, if it is whale season, that you can see the whales and they are often just frolicking off the beaches.
If someone offered me a free trip, I would take Gold Coast every time. It is a relaxing and fun holiday and the weather is perfect.

At the moment, Melbourne is the best choice as it's a great season for shopping, food and light travel.
