The Government..............after much Dilly dalling finally started a study on Vietnam Vetrans familys, and most importantly the children of Vetrans, last year (2011) after nearly a year the families receive a letter from Vetrans affairs saying " they can not continue the study, because ( and get this ) they ran out of MONEY" because of the "BOAT PEOPLE" expense, but another thing was guess what they gave themselves a pay rise TWO (2) days later, what a crock, what do people think????????

The 'Boat People' excuse is pretty ordinary. If we honour our servicemen who return from conflict resolution duties in foreign lands these studies are needed. We do need to do anything we can to support family members of Returned Services People OR deceased service people after the event

I must say, right now, that the people who work/volunteer for Legacy are doing great work, not to please their ego or anything less than helping war veterans and
their kids who are living a fatherless life.
Some people missed out on any aid,but this was probably due to the great pride of the mother who would think no aid was enough to atone for the family`s loss of their husband/father.Here,I stand up and agree. No Govt after any war has cared
sufficiently for the heroes they volunteered to send to their death overseas.
PS.I taught my children to handle life with the veterans passed on sicknesses.

that's cool Chris....I have been in similar positions and sometimes you just have to let it all out! Perhaps if you connect with one of the Vietnam Vets associations they may offer you some support or at least some understanding.

thankyou 888shelley, I have not been to Vietman ( would love to ) but have seen the considerable damage to the people (my son researches all this) sorry I get so angry, my son, daughter, along with hundreds more in this country are still suffering (neverlone those in Vietman) and it is not just right, I`m sure they don`t expect a hand out, and neither do we , just some acknowledgement, and maybe some practicale support ( as money is not an answer, and can not undo the damage). I am sorry to say this but, and this is a big BUT, Legacy, would not offer us any help, would not even acknowledge , that my x was my sons father, even though we had all the identification, (eg) service number. Birth certificates, I will NEVER understand this, it is not right, my son is in a wheelchair, and has lots of problems SCA which i s depleation od the cerebella, plus auto immune system damage , my daughter has lots of immune (auto) system damage as well, tere are numerous people out there sons and daughters with similar problems, Governments only cover cleft palate, cerebel palusy (which is Neural tube defect) (same as my sons) plus some psyclology sessions, so sorry about the RANT, I just get so frustrated. sorry about the mess I made before I just could not eraseit, THANKYOU for you thoughtfull ness....Chris....

I was a child looked after by the Legacy group following WW2 as my father died from war related problems. There was NEVER any study into the families or children that I was aware of. Legacy and Gov bodies just helped the children with education, medical and dental expenses and provided social activities for children and widows...kids had dance classes, judo, etc and every year there was a fantastic christmas day out, all sponsored by the returned soldiers who were committed to helping their mates kids and wives. I am also sure that no study etc was done for WW1 vets either who had to live with many of the horrors they had endured. You were just expected to get on with life, which some found extremely diffficult. No special compensation or consideration for either of these events from the Government of the day (Libs).
As for the 'boat people ' excuse it is pretty lame.

Hi Chris, thanks for clarification of your problem. Agree with you totally re Vietnam war....we had no business being there. I visited Vietnam last year , a beautiful country and lovely people. I saw first hand the number of war graves as we drove through the country from Hanoi in the north to Saigon south. In Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) we visited the War Museum, previously named the Museum of American Attrocities. After half an hour there I was nearly in tears as I learned so much more of what a terrible thing had been done in that country. The documentation of the levels of Agent Orange and other chemicals used there was horrific and the photos of children still born today with dreadful disfigurements show that it is an ongoing horror. We also met local people who were affected by sprays and napalm, including one tour guide who had 30% of his body napalmed and only survived as his mum threw herself over him, she died to save him. He was a lovely open person and he just said 'It was war, no blame on anyone" , which seemed to be the attitude of most of the viets we met. My husband also used these sprays when living on a farm so we understand how bad they are. I don't know why Legacy would not help you, but I think it may have been that they considered you were your husband's responsibility as he was still alive, no one had researched the effects of sprays etc properly until years later. Myeloid Leukemia is certainly a cause of sprays. Hubby's cousin is a Veteran too and he is still suffering problems.
Keep on searching for groups that are into the same situation as yours, until authorities recognize that this won't go away. Good Luck Chris!
