Hi Paradox - I googled the information that you gave me

this is the link that I found

http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_311670

Below is what the site said...

ACMA is aware of an email currently circulating providing misinformation about mobile numbers being made 'public' in the near future. It advises that as a consequence mobile users will be charged for calls made by telemarketing companies to their mobile service.

While the email refers to the Australian Do Not Call Register website, it appears to have originated in North America a number of years ago and has been intermittently circulating since that time. The reference to consumers being 'charged' arises from the different charging regime for mobile calls in the USA, where often charges are incurred by mobile phone users for calls they receive. This charging regime does not apply in Australia.

The Australian Do Not Call Register has strong mechanisms in place to protect the privacy of registrants. The numbers on the Do Not Call Register are never provided directly to telemarketers.

Consumers can list their Australian fixed line and mobile numbers on the Do Not Call Register, provided the numbers are used primarily for private or domestic purposes, on www.donotcall.gov.au . Consumers can also register by phoning 1300 792 958.

Under the Do Not Call Register Act 2006, telemarketers can check their calling lists against the Do Not Call Register. If a telemarketer calls a number on the Do Not Call Register, they may be in breach of the Act, and may face penalties.

ACMA recommends recipients of the email delete it and not forward it on to other email users.

Here is a version of the email being circulated:

"REMEMBER: Mobile Phone Numbers Go Public next month.

this information is from march 2009 ...and the myth had been round for a couple of years before that even.

sherri, the reason you are still getting charities calling you is probably the same as for NO JUNK mail stickers on your letter box. Politicians and charities are exempt from the laws prohibiting unsolicited mail from being put into your letter box. It is obvious who made the law. hahaha. The only recourse you have is to complain to the originators as you have done.

And yes, - re the Do Not Call Register....I was registered for a while till I learnt that it does not block all calls - I still get the 'charity calls' - which I class in the same category.

It does sound mean, but I consider that cold calling people for any reason is an invasion of privacy, and I have started telling callers that I have now added their particular charity to my personal do not support list. - even for organisations that I have previously supported. There are more good charities out there than I could possibly support, so I choose to only support those who behave ethically.

Since I started doing this, (and telling the telemarketers that too), there has been a dramatic decrease in pestering phone calls! Funny that!

Further to your research, thank you for your reply. I have passed your advise on to my email friends and will be checking their emails out from now on. So far because of the many trusted email accounts on this mailing list I had no reason to double check anything. Goes to show, there is always a first time. I apologise if I have misled anyone and humbly beg your forgiveness.

sherri, Hi there. While your research is correct in part it is nevertheless advisable to register your phones with DO NOT CALL as I have experienced first hand how some companies exploit every loophole to trap the unwary. I'd forgotten about that until a friend sent me the reminder. Sorry about the link it was past my normal bedtime when I posted this.

I had not heard about that - would like to know more about that, but you forgot to put in the link.

How will I be charged for receiving sale calls? - I am not charged for regular calls unless they go through to message bank.

Also, I can just imagine what would happen if people find that they are charged for extra services that they did not sign up for! The telecomunications ombudsman is going to be VERY busy!

Help Caféstudy members by responding to their questions, or ask your own in Café Chat, and you will get the chance of earning extra rewards. Caféstudy will match these and donate equally to our two chosen Australian charities.
