Hi folks we have noticed this year that there are not as many Hedgehogs about this year (2011). We usually have lots of them in our garden but not this year.
I miss the little critters and the slugs and snails are rampant.

We have hedgehogs. I think they were introduced to NZ from England.
Our native bird the kiwi nests on the ground and I do understand that the Hedgies get in and eat the eggs as do Possums.
There have been some albino hedgehogs born in NZ very cute.
We finally had our first one the other night, we used to have 5 or 6 regulars and as each have different markings we knew the same ones kept coming back.

That hedgehog is just so cute, the only time I've seen one was on a trip to UK to visit family and there was a mother one in my cousins potting shed, apparently it was a female and she came every year to have her young in safety.

Hi Again Ro
Have a look at the site Bob has supplied and then let me know which do you have as Hedgehogs and Echidnas are different animals and are they a native to NZ or an introduced animal?
Bob
There are Echidnas in the outer suburbs of Melbourne, details here; http://www.australianfauna.com/echidna.php

Hi Mazzs1are you in NZ ? When the hedge hogs have their young they are so small and cute. We used to have one that nested in the leaf litter in my garden. She would often have 5 or more little ones that she would take out at sunset to hunt for slugs, snails and other nocturnal insects.
