One of the main reasons why Australia is invilved in these conflicts is because of our insecurity. As we are have but a small defence force we have to rely on other countries to protect us. Before the second world war we were British all the way. They were supposed to send out a fleet if and when we were being attacked. What happened was the British government fobed us off and after much pressure sent out 2 battleships. the airforce in singapore was just a token force. As we could not rely on the British the australian government changed their allegienc to the good old USA. we signed the SEATO and others treaties to come to their assistance when they as usual got into too much trouble. They are supposed to protect us from the big bullies in our region. China,Indonesia and other south east Asian dictators.
so in essence we don't realy have any say in where we send our troops because if america wants help we are compelled to go. even when these countries are so corrupt and disorganised.

I get a bit fed up with people bagging the US and I am sure they would be there for us if necessary. However, I do wish Australia, US, Britain etc. would adopt much more of a 'Win them over with generosity and kindness' rather than sending soldiers in. If people are fed and have good basic living standards and jobs, then they are happy.

Did you notice that it's always the conservatives that get us into all this trouble. I won't honour them with the name liberal because they are anything but and I do support our anzus treaties. Especially with the belligerent neighbours that we have.

No one doubts that Australia tied itself to America's apron strings in World War II. However one hope that that is not the complete reason why it has followed America into wars and skirmishes ever since. Other countries, aligned with the States and equally or more deficient in defence capacity, have exercised an independent discretion on whether or not they participate in particular military adventures.
