Hi everyone, I have been suffering with migraines and other sorts of headaches for the past 35 years. Over that time I have tried everything from pills to spells! . It's amazing what you will try to get rid of the pain. Many different things help me, the dark quiet room, painkillers, fluids etc but one thing that I find is above the normal is a FOAM NECK BRACE, they cost about $15 from the chemist. They work remarkably well. The neck brace takes a lot of strain from the neck which in turn helps the head from that terrible throbbing. You need to lay on your back, flat as you can on a very low pillow, also I use indocid suppositories (anti inflammatory) these help by reducing that feeling of blood pounding in the head. It may not be for everyone but worth a try for this dreadful problem. Cheers

Through working with people who have had an Acquired Brain Injury, following an accident such as yourself, I am aware that a number of them with long term migraines have found a good response to a low level (400mg -800mg) of Sodium Valproate, it will also help with tension. If you want to explore it, make sure you talk to a Neurologist, it is important to have the right assistance specific to you personally, and medication is not always the answer. Good Luck.

This really depends on the cause.
For migraines, whenever possible go into a quiet dark room and try to sleep.
Applying an ice pack or cool wet towel to the head may also be helpful.
For any type of headache, pain relievers may be used. Panadol (paracetamol) is generally the first choice for most people however for stronger pain it may not be strong enough. Anti-inflammatories such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Nurofen), diclofenac (Voltaren) or naproxen (Naprogesic) may be preffered. However check with a pharmacist or doctor before using these as not everyone should take them. Combination medications containing codeine can also be used however it is best to try other treatments first. Iit is best to take any pain killer in the early stages of a headache (especially migraine headaches).
Drink water if you are dehydrated, avoid going out in the sun, glare and heat and avoid allergy triggers if these contribute to your headaches.
Just a few tips, hope they help.

I also suffer from migraines. I have recently discovered a product called Kool N Soothe. It has a sticky back that either sticks to you forehead or the back of your neck. It gives up to 8 hours relief. and unlike a wet cloth or towel, it doesn't move if you move.

messaging your head does help a headache though sometimes its a chore if you have to do it to yourself whilst having a headache. if someone is home that can do it for you for just a few minutes should help.
fresh air and water should also help, sometimes what I do if I'm at home is I run my head under the cold tap for a few seconds and that helps decrease the temperature which helps lessen the pain.
I've found the best way is to sleep it off after a few remedies. I.e. taking some medication and sleeping it off, head under tap and massage and then sleep it off etc.

Hi hoppyof 5 5's, if headache strikes and you cannot get hold of tablets try this. with either hand place your first finger behind the middle of your opposing ball of your thumb and your thumb on top and squeeze reasonably hard for about 30 seconds. if your headache persists repeat for 1 minute. You should experience some relief without the need for medication. Apparently there is a pressure point there that relieves the headache. But investigate the cause of your Headache anyway. hope it helps, and no its not a joke.

I also find chocolate helps ease the pain, i suffer very severe migraines that usually last 2 or 3 days. I drink plenty of water (usually the recommended litre), exercise for 30 minutes and get 8 hours sleep every day yet for the last 2 and a half years i have suffered a severe migraine every week!! I have had CAT scans and a MIR scan which showed nothing. I even went to a neurologist for 18 months with monthy assessments done on my diet, stressors and different types of medication.

I do think my migraines are heat and stress related as i endure the worst ones in summer where i vomit everything i eat or drink back up within 15 minutes of consuming food or drink.

I do find a dark quiet cool room and and icepack on my head helps greatly.

People have suggested acupuncture, i am yet to try that due to lack of time and money to afford it. Has anyone with migraines had acupuncture and it worked?

I have suffered with migraines for approx 40 years, they vary in intensity.
Sometimes there are many months when they disappear.
When I wake up of a morning with a migraine, they are usually severe & more difficult to control.
I aim to be in a darkened room, as "noise-free" as possible, "sleeping" usually is necessary to help alleviate the pain.
A lavender pillow & herbal teas help with relaxation.
Keeping your forehead cool certainly helps, also some fresh air.
My feet often become quite cold, so I keep them warm.
Taking magnesium tablets has been of benefit. I also have a feverfew plant.
Adding cordial to your water can be a nice change, the sweeter taste may be helpful.
My tummy is usually very sensitive, so I avoid all food.
Pain relief can be taken, I prefer to use a mixture from my herbalist.
I have read articles where some people soak their feet in warm water, whilst keeping their forehead icy cold.

To ease a headache could be that you been out the sun too much or not enough water inside ya body or otherwise you been stressing out or thinking too much which could gives you a headache aswell. But to deal with it can be doing your own Relaxation which feel right for you.

Their say you should drink as much water as you can in one day but 8 liters is alots of most people to drink in one day even on a very hot day so we try to stay out of the sun as much as possible....

If you are having a headache from 20 years ago from your motorcycle than I suggest you see a doctor about it to see if their can give you ideas to stop the headache because I can see it becoming a problem for you.

Hi I suffer from migraines and the thing that helps me is putting a wet flannel on my forehead and drinking a lot of water. I do this before I take any extra pain killers..
Hope this helps you....
