i have just been through a period of time where an organisation clamed they could find people
they lie they dont help fathers to find and to be able to see there children from broken relationships
so went in and started to verafy who works for the salvation army
the amount of police and police investigators located behind doors that should not just fall open is completely idiotic
why are we the general public donating money , clothes , household items to the supposed religious sector
lies and more lies
just wanted people to know what we found hiding instore
police with no real duties for a reason they are investigators
its a cruel world with more lies than they can dictate to us all

Its over 40 years now, and I still feel some anger, but Salvation Army illegally interfered in my life, so much that it has had devestating lifelong effects on me and my children. It wasn't just a few people, it was SA policy and many people received the same treatment. Even going to them about 10 years ago regarding the past circumstances I was met with negativity and an unwillingness to deal with the situation.

Yes, they do a lot of good work, but there is another side to them, Sorry to the 'soldiers' here and other christians. I know most of you do your best to care for people aiming for positive outcomes, but even more recent experiences that I myself and others I know have had with the SA indicate a less than 'caring' side to the Salvation Army.

Hi Stretch. You sound very angry and maybe you have a right to be angry, I don't know, but I do know that if you acted like this to someone else then you probably wouldn't get any help. You catch more flies with honey. Also they have to observe they rights of all parties and therefore they might not be able to help you. The Salvos are a great bunch of people who help everyone they can, but you also have to remember that they do get a lot of calls for help and they can only stretch their resourses so far. If you watch the news when there is a disaster you will always see the Salvos there helping. I am not a Salvo but I never go past one asking for donations without giving whatever I can, I have only asked them for help once but I hated asking so I have never asked again, but I know if I do they would help me. But that doesn't stop me from helping them and I am a pensioner on disability. Try taking a step back and listen to what they do before you judge them on what you think is happening. Good luck to you. Take care

The Salvos are there (theoretically) to assist and help people, i find that SOME individuals who tend to volunteer do so for their own selfish reasons such as preaching to others or to feel supperior or sometimes just to get involved in other peoples lives(which in most cases just cause trouble for some poor soul). Having said that the majority do seem to really try to help.
Also it would be interesting to know how much donated money actually goes out to people in need!

I have recently just left working for The Salvation Army and think I can add a little bit of information.

TSA has two arms. The first is the Social Work side of things. As this is largely financed by the government social work professionals are hired for just about everything. There is nothing to say that they must be Christian or anything like that. Simply that they have the skills to do their job. There are also a wide range of volunteers who help out in soup kitchen types of areas.

The other arm is the church side of the organisation. in the past TSA church members did the social work, but as the social work sector has grown, and become more professional less and less members work. They then, work in the a voluntary capacity in their churches. You would normally see these volunteers doing youth groups, some emergency relief, and collecting for the red shield appeal.

TSA also has very strict guidelines that comply and at times go beyond the legal requirements for working with children with every person who comes into contact with kids having to do a working with children's check and a police check.

Hope that helps.

My personal opinion of Salvation Army is that they are honourable and truly help people in need

They have good christian values in helping others

Is it possible your ex has made accusations against you ??? The Salvation Army may be obligated to check with the Police as they may think they are putting the children at risk in some way. If your ex is legally obligated to allow you to see your children and they have not objected to seeing you, arrangements can be made to collect/ return them via a Police Station and you not meet your ex. You may have to take it to the Family Court. You can also request that she not be allowed to take them interstate at all without your permission. I personally know of a case where this was included in a new court order - not children of mine.

Well Stretch,it sounds to me that you have been given a hard time, but also have given a hard time to someone you think deserves it. Did you give a hard time to the people/person you were looking for?I don`t even want to know why you had to look for them at the Salvation Army. The Sallies are all heroes in my mind, they have very strong beliefs, but they are rarely physically strong. That could explain the occasional presence of law enforcement volunteers when needed.
All my life i have watched the Sallies do their magic.Always they were given great respect. They even reached out to Viet-Nam to help the diggers and their families
back home.God bless Australia and the Sallies and go easy on our mate Stretch.

When I am going through things to 'pay it forward', the Salvos are my first port of call. Regardless of good or bad people in an organisation, the Salvos are always first in there. Don't care if it is a religion, they do a lot of good and stand up to be counted. I'm sorry your experience with the Slavos has been tainted, but the overall image is positive and there is a reason for that!

I know charities rely on money , but I don't like the way the Salvation Army is now charging maximum prices for their 2nd hand stuff at their family stores. I shop there because I can't afford to buy new stuff and some of their prices are ridiculously high. The staff/ volunteers in our branch are older women who are so rude, sometimes I feel embarrassed to go to the counter! Maybe they should spend less money on TV and radio advertising for their stores so they can keep the prices a little more realistic. I know charities are all competing these days , but surely the Sallies are high enough profile that they shouldn't be needing to advertise nightly on the TV? Some shops are also selling some of their 'better' stuff on Trade Me too because they can get more money that way - its all about the money honey !!!!!

It is possible that they may not be paying for the advertising. It may be done as a community service announcement. I know some Radio Stations do that.

They wouldn't even come and look at the wardrobe or other furniture that was offered to them. The wardrobe was a heavy very solid one.

They may have put it in another shop. I beleive some of the donations are taken to a central point for checking firat. My Dad brought stuff to Adelaide from the country town he lived in, It had to be checked first ads there has been occasions where fabric items that have been homemade or repaired by the donors have had pins, needles or safety pins left in them.
e.g. SA Ambulance has to check knitted Trauma Teddies for that reason as they had an incident.

I know some people who have donated very nice things to the Sallies and don't anymore because they never saw it in the shop, I can't help but wonder if there's a bit of behind the scene ' reservations' going on. We seem to have a group of older women in our local outlet who are quite keen on getting 'first dibs'. I no longer donate to the Salvation Army. Instead, I give to our local Birthrite store - their prices are reasonable and they are always grateful for donations. In some instances where the wooden furniture has been 'below standard' , they have asked if the giver minds if it is used for kindling. Low income families need heat too ! It's a good idea !

Yes, the days of the good old-fashioned op-shop has long gone. There are still a couple, but they are pretty scarce these days.

And sadly, the Salvos led the way in the up-marketisation...

I have found that too Sherri. A lot of their electrical items like jugs , can be bought cheaper from The Warehouse or even the Supermarket. Granted these are not 'top of the line' brands , but....... they are brand new and do come with a warranty. The same linen - Why buy a 2nd hand duvet cover for $15 when you can get a new one on sale? I find I am supporting Birthrite more these days.... their prices are reasonable and they are always thrilled to receive a donation. I got completely turned off the sallies the day I heard the 'mature' volunteer women arguing over a 'good' item that had come into the store. - they all wanted it. Unfortunately, I am not the only person who has witnessed this at our local branch. Perhaps I should volunteer there and get the "good' stuff that I NEED for my family while I am out of work ??

Friends of mine tired to donate some beautiful old wardrobes - almost antique - not a single mark on them -and they wouldn't take them. A lot of people donate furniture etc. thinking it will be used for fire and flood relief. It seems so who make the decisions do not take that into consideration. Goodwill gladly took them.

And sadly, the Salvos led the way in the up-marketisation of the humble op-shop. And most followed because they think that they have to keep up! And my experience is that Salvos STILL are the most expensive - leading a friend of mine to recently comment that she no longer op-shops because she has found that if she is careful she can usually buy an item new at a cheaper price than she can at the Salvos.

I think there are good and bad people in all organisations. Unfortunately the bad so often undo what good is being or has been done. The Salvation Army give a lot of support to single mums. Their support for the troubled men in our society is not heard of as much because fewer men swallow their pride and ask for help. The Salvation Army is also non discriminatory. They do not turn you away if you do not attend their church.

I can't believe all the negativity RE: "The Salvation Army" I have nothing but admiration for them. Firstly My G'Mother on my mother's side, told me she doesn't know how her whole Family would have survived without their help. She was a single mother of 5 kid's & The Salvo's turned up every week with food parcels, Plus clothing & blankets when needed, I have alway's donated to the Salvo's because of this story, Not only that but my partner is a Pom & lost contact with his Family in England for over 30yrs, His Mother never ever gave up & paid the Salvo's 15 Pounds a year to find him & they did just that. I have also had help from the Salvo's myself (years ago of course) My marriage broke down, I needed a hand & The Salvo's were only too happy to help.
God Bless you all & I hope things start to look up for any of you who need help.

ok the negative atitude i will agree wqith you on this on my behalf
this is because when i asked the local group for help with my kids and they do this kind of thing for a cost i still have the paper work a copy of
i got nothing but hassle from them so went and got a few mates to help ot and bing we hit home there were police investigators inside the company and they decided who they helped out as long as they like you they will bend over and help you all but if you cross the line nothing but hassle
so all we give tehm now is the truth about who they are
if inb doubt you should visit a country area called armidale and see how many houses they have and see how many you or the church can get into without a lawyer
we have placed photoes and video recording on the internet to prove how legal this orgnisation is has become
in days parst they helped out he homeless nowdays tey place people in jails and in front of the courts
shame on nthe salvation narmy for the lies

Agreed Tiddler! I'm a Salvation Army Soldier and have been in the salvos all my life. I have had a wonderful experience with the salvation army and have been lucky with the ministers assigned to my corps, but also recognize not everyone's experience is the same. I just hope every can see past their one negative experience and focus on the salvos amazing social justice efforts as a whole (:

Sad to hear about that. I have seen hoe well this organization works first hand. When i moved houses a few years ago there was an elderly couple living a few doors down. You never saw them outside, no one visited them but twice a week the Salvos turned up with food and clothing for them. They even mowed the small lawn for them, so i asked the Salvos if i could help in any way and i started mowing their lawn for them. I never spoke to the couple but there was always a cold cordial left out for me. Sadly they passed, but i felt that without the Salvos careing for them they would have passed years before they did. I have nithing but admiration for th Savation Army.

My Dad always said that the Salvation Army assisted the Armed Forces in England during WW11....They assist people during national disasters. I know a family who were rescued from the street after being evicted when the Dad died suddenly from a Brain Haemorrage and their landlord let them remove their stuff, then locked them out because they were unable to pay their rent until what was then Social Security started paying the Mum a pension. All of the children, some only very young were still living at home, she had nobody to leave them with so had not got a job. One of the children was disabled so it wasn't possible at that stage anyway.

This is true! The Salvation Army claim to be religious and good natured and truth be told some of them are. But others are not so great or helpful at all. My father was raised in the Salvation Army, his parents were Salvation Army officers. But how can they believe in, preach and love this so called god? My father was brutally beaten, unloved and hated by his parents. He loves them dearly and would love to feel the love that his brothers and sisters feel but they will not even speak to him. My grandfather once told me that we must believe in different gods when I confronted them about the way they treat my Dad. They got my father fired from many jobs, they served trespass notices on all of us grandchildren (6) all aged from 10yrs to 20yrs and in general are cruel heartless people!!! But maybe there is a verse in the bible that says "preach love from the pulpit but treat your own like crap."

Wow Jay, my great Grandparents were Officers of the Salvation Army and i was brought up a Salvo, i have never ever heard of anyone doing that, it is very sad to hear that happened to your Dad and to your family. That can happen in any walk of life so we can't just say that the Salvo's are a bad lot etc. To me it just says that your Grandfather is just one bad one in a group of many good ones!

I'm sorry to hear how your dad was treated by his parents. It saddens me to think that someone who is a Salvation Army officer can act in a way that is in complete contrast to the bible which is what they are meant to be preaching. And to treat their own child so brutally is upsetting. I hope that somehow, someway your grandparents will realise what they have done and how they have hurt your father, you and the other grandchildren and things can be recitfied. It may sound impossible but anything is possible with just a little faith.

dont know the bible just learnt how to identify police and investigators as have made a few areas of mistakes
the salvos generally do a freat job its the liers in wolf skins that are making it hard for the ral ones to operate
your dad would have learned something that i never have
forgive my enemies of there sins i go for payback even if it hurts people
police , police informers children i have given up more than most people could or would and i do it for revenge
the majority of people will disagree with me but there is only one form of revenge left

I don't understand really what you are talking about with police and investigators behind it all and lies being told, etc.

I guess in any organisation even the church you will always have a few people who lie and pertend to be something else and make up stories whether it's to fit in, to look good, out of fear or other reasons.

You are right ashman, any organisation and any church have a minority that can be false. We as humans need to trust our feelings when dealing with anyone. The Salvo's are a good religion and they do great Charity work, I for one have never been lied to by them but i do realise it could happen.

Stretch they may or may not have lied to you when saying they could find your family! They may have found them but when they did it might have been for legal reasons that they could not have told you of their whereabouts. Also i do believe that they don't say they will find them, they say that they will TRY and find them!!!!!!
