I have recently joined the local Lions Club because all the money raised is used for needy causes. As all members are volunteers,no money raised through various activities like Fairs,Barbecues etc is used up by administration fees & other expenses occurred by professional fund raisers. It also fosters a community spirit not motivated by profits

A relative of mine is a volunteer for a branch of the Lions Club in SA. She explained to me that when approached for assistance for equipment - even for disdability - they actually buy the equipment and donate it. They don't give the person the money to buy it themselves as theyhave been "ripped off"
She also told me that our Local SES had applied to them for assistance as the Govt. Had cutting their funding back and they urgently needed repairs to some of the equipment and in some cases new as it was cheaper to buy new than repairs.
The Lions Club she belongs to submits their financial and other details to the Local Council each year for a grant. They had a small garage from which they ran garage sales regularly including some weekdays and it was vandalised, not just damaged but set alight and most of the donated goods destroyed completely and others smoke damaged. They also used to collect newspaper which they took to a place and received funds from. We used to save ours and take to them fairly regularly. Somebody owned a trailer and used to take it for them. It happened to be in the shed and was destroyed too.
