My wife recently took me out for my birthday at a 5 star hotel in the city. The buffet was excellent, but the experience was somewhat soured when we were charged $10.00 for a glass of watermelon juice & $6.50 for a cup of coffee. How can this be justified?

My husband has worked in hotels for over 15 years and the last 4 years in a 5+ star hotel overseas. The reason the cost is higher is because the staff to customer ratios are higher the more stars you have, this includes behind the scenes as well. All the food, crockery and other items that make up a hotel are generally better quality and more expensive too. Obviously they are a business and have to recoup these costs. Also sometimes simple economics of supply and demand come into play when prices are being set.
