Why is valentines day so important?

In today's society valentines day is celebrated everywhere. I see girls walking around with roses, chocolates, teddies and often wonder do people esp. the youngsters even know what it stands for and the history behind it or is this just an excuse for companies to make more money?
I often get the disappointed look from family/friends upon telling them my husband and I don't celebrate valentines day.
Why is there so much pressure? Do you feel it too?
Shouldn't we love and care for each other every day of the year? What is so special about that particular day?

What annoys me is everyone saying happy valentines day to each other , like their friends and people on facebook that they hardly know. I thought Valentines was for people romantically involved. Each day can be Valentines and it doesn't have to be expensive .. a note saying "I love you" , cooking a special meal. ... a loving look. Having said that it is nice to recieve chocolates and be taken out for dinner!
