Why is valentines day so important?

In today's society valentines day is celebrated everywhere. I see girls walking around with roses, chocolates, teddies and often wonder do people esp. the youngsters even know what it stands for and the history behind it or is this just an excuse for companies to make more money?
I often get the disappointed look from family/friends upon telling them my husband and I don't celebrate valentines day.
Why is there so much pressure? Do you feel it too?
Shouldn't we love and care for each other every day of the year? What is so special about that particular day?

Why not a nice bottle of wine, cheese bickies and olives, sitting on a river bank watching the sun set after work!!!. Cheap and romantic. Throw a fishing line in and icing on the cake. any excuse. Tray
