Why is valentines day so important?

In today's society valentines day is celebrated everywhere. I see girls walking around with roses, chocolates, teddies and often wonder do people esp. the youngsters even know what it stands for and the history behind it or is this just an excuse for companies to make more money?
I often get the disappointed look from family/friends upon telling them my husband and I don't celebrate valentines day.
Why is there so much pressure? Do you feel it too?
Shouldn't we love and care for each other every day of the year? What is so special about that particular day?

My husband and I have been married for 46 years and have celebrated valentines day every year. He was one of the first people to put a notice in the paper.
Why not make life fun in every way you can?
