I am retired and live in a Brisbane suburb. Since coming here from Darwin I am amazed at the low price of fruit and vegetable but distraught by the high price of meat. A few weeks ago however my wife and I stumbled across a Vietnamese market village and to our surprise found that the butcher there had meat far below what our local butcher and our supermarket were charging. The cuts are a little different but most fat is trimmed and if you request that something needs to be cut a certain way, you get service with a smile. We have since found a number of these butchers in our area and save sometimes as much as 50% on our purchases. Try it out if you can, it's worth it as the quality is excellent.

I have also found that meat is expensive and this includes chicken and fish espcially when cpmared to the price of vegetables. Given this I now use more vegetables in my cooking with some meat and have also found that I do enjoy eating like this and it does feel healthier too. I grew up in a fmaily where we ate a large amount of meat every day and I have spoken with many people about this and everyone agrees that noone eats that quatity of meat anymore. Both my parents did have chlolesterol problems which resulted in their ill health so I guess that moderation with meat is a good thing for me anyway. I also do use low fat mince and look for specials when buying any meat and fish and can get some good stuff this way and still be happy with my meals. Learning to be reative with cooking and seeking out receipes has also helped alot.
